Beetle 1.8 t engine R & R question

My son has a 2001 Beetle in my garage with a blown motor.
The car appears to be worthless as is. I'm a pretty competant home mechanic, and have been thinking about getting a used motor and doing the swap. If I go that route, I'll get a manual, but until then....

• For those that have done this before, how many hours did it take you the first time?
• Would you do it again?
• Are there any specialty tools that are required?
• I'm in Michigan and would be looking for an AWV motor. Any ideas?
• I used the search function but couldn't find a write-up on engine R&R. Does anyone have one or know where I could find one here or on the web?
