im not sure of the years they put the VR in the passat but im pretty sure the guy im getting my VR from said it was a 97. all VRs from 96 to 99.5 are all the same. anything older than 96 is an OBD1 and a distributor.

lemme expand on that a little.

96-99=coilpack, obd2.

93.5-95=coilpack, obd1, change the sensors, you're good.

92-93.5=distributor, obd1, use the block, but not the head.

passat vr6 was available from 1992-1997.
corrado vr6 was available from 1992-1995.
jetta vr6 was available from 1994-1999.

all jettas had coilpacks.

most passats did have coilpacks, though i have an EARLY 1993 vr6 wagon wih no bags that's a distro motor.

corrados didn't get the coilpack until very late in the 1993 model year.

that being said, a 1998-1999 is your best bet for a used motor. they had the revised chain setup and tend to have the least amount of miles.
