and your done !!!
sorry my mistake. i ment a mid engine...

I would keep the NB as original looking as it is and just get a water cooled rear engine in that body and it should be nice. maybe a Subaru or a Porsche engine to keep the boxer engine theme in place.

Do not try to make the new beetle a classic looking one. Just make the NB as close to the character of the classic beetle. AWD NB would also be nice

Dear 60degree V6,
Why is a vw guy talking like this?
No, you don't want to put a v6 in the rear. You must be talking about taking a rear mounted engine and putting in the front? That's two bad ideas. Your thread has hopefulls tuning in to hear about the New New Beetle getting a rear mounted engine. In the rear where it belongs. Nothing Froidian here...

as to you idea of installing a rear mounted engine, I think it's a great idea! if i were you, I would look into a GM 60 degree v6. (think 3100, 3400, 3500.) The engines make good power, lots of torque, are designed for FWD, and are very tuneable. You could run it off of an ecu from an early v6 cavalier, which are cheap and easy to come by, and very reliable.[/QUOTE]

I have been a fan of the aircooled type1's for some time now and over the years have owned many.

Now it is time for me to take on a new project....and hopefully somewhat unique. The prices for the first prodcution new beetles have been dropping quite a bit now so this is now feasable...i can get a 1999 model for around $2000...which is cheaper than a rusted out classic beetle.

What I am considering is transplanting an engine into the rear of a new beetle.

I'm not proposing trying to put a n aircooled engine in it as I want a bit more power and less maintenance...but what I would like to do is to take engine transmission/trans-axle out of a donor front wheel drive car, modify it so that the spindles no longer steer and drop that into the back of the new beetle.

Any thoughts on this?...I have seen this done with an aircooled engine but I am unable to find the link/picture again.

any suggestions on engines..I'm looking fr an older engine combo so I can avoid the computers...there are no emissions requirements where I live.

The car would be completely gutted an rewired as well.

Default Mid engine yes the way Leno did it

And do the BMW liquid hydrogen fuel cell tank mounted low as possible in the front with a steel skid plate!
or
Install an Electrolysis cell that produces 10 litres per minute of Hydrogen hooked up to a compressor.

I was thinking of something like that but more mid engine. you could take the sub frame out of an MR2 or use the frame of the jetta tdi kit car that was developed and marry it into the beetle chasis.

just a thought.

With the engine in there, as soon as the crash reach the front face of the engine it gets instantly transferred to the rear of the engine, losing you 3ft of crumple space and increasing the deceleration G's

The 1940's design of the aircooled body is why it performs so badly, not because it doesn't have the "safety" of the engine in the front.
