Agreed.... the reason engine swaps don't get done very often its just not cost-effective to do them. Even a used car will cost LESS than the cost of an engine swap and all that labor to install it.

why junk a perfectly good car when swapping the motor is possible. If you have an endless pocket and can afford to just throw you car on the scrap pile because its motors blown well so be it.

Some people grow quite attached to there rides and that why you do things that go over and above the money side of things...

Built not Bought... Nail on head

Also .. costs vary in different countries. In areas outside the US it may actually be cheaper to buy an engine and do a swap than to junk a car and buy a new one.

I say to each his own. I have a 1975 bug (that I love dearly!!!!) and I plan to do an engine swap (conversion) because I can get a used water-cooled engine (non-vw ... I know, I know, sacrilege!!) for the same price I can buy the alternator for an air-cooled vw engine. (NOTE: Not in USA)

ALSO... if you bought the car NEW the interior and body is customized to your liking. I'd not sell my straight body car for a car with more damage to the exterior but the engine I wanted, that's just crazy in my opinion.
This can be done? Woah! Now I want to save up to get a TDI in my Snap Orange CC!

Yes, shell is a shell. The wiring harness all passes thru the same. There is no difference in a TDI, Turbo or plain gas shell, it's all the same. That's why the core hardware (subframe, doors, windows, hoods, hatch, latches, and in the non-turbo gas and diesel brake systems, and for all suspension systems) are identical. It'll time some time (you'll need the ECU, Engine, complete wiring harness, and some other bits I'm sure, hoses, etc) but it's entirely possible using THE SAME motor mounts (99% sure on that, as the 1.8T into Rabbit swaps are done because VW hasn't changed their 4-banger mount design since the 70s).
