Default 2.0 engine variations

I have a 2000 beetle with a 2.0 automatic with a bad engine. I want to swap it out with another 2.0. I have been told there are different variations, could someone tell me what years and model cars have the 2.0 I need or direct me to a good reference?

Thank you.

open your hood on the passenger side their is a black cover for timing with bar code i believe it will say which engine you have look for "aeg" or "avh" or "azg" should be one of those.

Default Its an AEG

The timing cover says it's an aeg, do I have to use an aeg, or will any 2.0 beetle engine work?
