I'm coming your way April 22-28 for a Habitat for Humanity build in New Orleans. I find out more at a meeting on March 30, but they've already told us we'll be working from about 7-2pm every day, so I'm free after that if anyone is in the area and available for dinner or something.

I thought... why are they doing a build for New Orleans in LA? Maybe they'll ship them the stuff...? LOL!
Dang, Cori... you got me all excited! But that is super super cool you're doing that! I'd love to get involved in something like that. How do you do it?

Cori, are you flying or driving? If it's by Bug (or other wheeled vehicle [other than an airplane's landing gear
]) and you're passing through this way, stop on by! I've got a guest room!Cali folks, I thought the same thing! I'll be sure to be very clear when I'm heading out that way! ![]()

Jacob, I am flying with 131 other people!! Most of them I have never met before. A lot are from our church, Redeemer Lutheran here in Fort Collins, but the rest are from the community and Colo St University. This is the biggest relief trip to New Orleans(number wise)to help with Katrina recovery. I find out more March 30. We're going to build something...house, school...?? Sorry about the mixup - I put LA, since I was looking at the state abbreviations as I was typing.
California people, I will let you know when I am coming!COri |

I was hurrying to finish my email so my boss/coworkers wouldn't see my slacking off! My exact location in Louisiana will be in the town of Violet, just outside of New Orleans. Any NB/org people there after Katrina? Let me know so we can meet!Cori |

SilverSportNOLA still lives there, I think, unless he's moved since then.
Funny thing (to me, anyway ) I used to think he lived North Of Los Angeles. Nope! It was New Orleans LouisianA!What a wonderful thing you're doing! Enjoy it! |

Cori .... It's great you are coming this way .... I will have to come up with something to do ... we don't have a big New Beetle group here, actually of my VW Friends locally, I am the Beetle.
Yes I lived in Lakeveiw as a child and up through college, I am now living just across the river from uptown New Orleans. Jacob .... that was SilverSport in North LA .... That's why I had to add NOLA (New Orleans, LA) to my name when I joined. I still have the Diverter Valve on my car from SilverSports car .... so we are related that way. |

Ok here's the deal. We arrive late Sunday April 22 and leave about 6pm Saturday April 28. We work from about 7:30-3:30 Mon-Fri. The Habitat leaders don't really know if we'll have any free time after that since we'll need to go back to our sleeping area, called Camp Hope, and shower right away.
Since there will be about 300 people at Camp Hope at the same time and 150 showers, getting a shower spot might take awhile. Then dinner, a debriefing, Bible study and SLEEP!! Friday night the Habitat leaders are taking us out to dinner, so there might be some time to meet up with some of you locals. Saturday is a completely open day. My mom and I want to go to the French Quarter and try to experience New Orleans in a day! I can give you my cell phone so you can contact me there. Cori |

We will have to see what we can do. That is the first weekend of the Jazzfest also. http://www.nojazzfest.com/ . Looks like Rod Stewart and Norah Jones are both playing that evening, after you depart. I haven't looked at the rest of the schedule to see which days I want to go.
Will see if I can get some folks together for Saturday on Bourbon St for a few hours. |

Yes, Habitat told us about the jazz fest in case we want to go. Since our time is limited, we decided we'd rather do the eating/shopping/sightseeing stuff instead. Thanks for organizing a 'GTG'!! If the time doesn't work out for people, that's OK - schedules can be crazy.

Okay .... has to be a good while before 5. We can start around 10AM .... I checked ... Central Grocery is open from 8AM til 5:30PM. It's good for some shopping, Can grab some lunch there and go to Cafe Du Monde afterwards. Bourbon St is mostly Bars and Clubs, if you can have a beer ... we can go to Jean Lafitte's BlackSmith Bar ... it is the oldest building in old New Orleans built in the mid 1700's. I am sure the two of you will pass some shops that you may want to shop at ... it is all in a small area so not too hard to see most of it. And maybe we can take a drive Uptown to ... New Orleans isn't just Bourbon Street and the French Quarter ... there is a lot of history here.
BTW ... just read all your earlier posts again. Guess I didn't see where you would be staying until now, you will be in lower St. Bernard Parish, I work across the river from there in Belle Chasse. There are two ferries that cross the river that go to St Bernard Parish, so it wouldn't be hard for me to meet up with you one day after work to do something. I haven't been down in the parish since Katrina, I was planning on taking a drive down there in my truck, just in case the roads are not shape for my low rider beetle. Well ... you got my Digits, and I am sure after the first day or two you will know what the schedule is like. 150 Showers for 300 people .... that's Great, there were only 2 in my Dorm Suite in College for 9 people. |
|
||||
|
Well that's assuming all 150 showers are working...
That's great if you want to pop over sometime after work. I really don't know the schedule will work until I get there, so we could have lots of time after working to hang around or we could be busy until bedtime. Since Habitat wants to take us to Cafe Du Monde Wednesday, Saturday is totally free now. Don't feel like you have to be our tour guide!! Is it really humid there now?Cori |
