I'd love if it happened again this year...I had to miss it last year unfortunately and I'm bummed that I did.

I don't have a NB any more and I don't know if Lisa's interested in running another one this year -- but if someone wants to take up the NBeast reins, go for it!

originally i was planning to run another one this year, and then last thanksgiving my bf asked me to move to virginia to live with him for a while. so for a period of some months, i thought i was going to be living in virginia, and that i'd bring it back to the virginia beach area.

then my request to be a remote worker was denied and we had to scrap that plan.

i could organize another nbeast in durham without a lot of trouble. the site we used last year is in much, much better condition this year. HOWEVER. i think the location was one of the two huge problems that we had that prevented nbeast from being all that it could be, so after last year's nbeast, i didn't think it should be in durham again.

i had thoughts of planning one in asheville, NC. it's a tourist town with more things to do; it's in the far western part of the state, which would make it more accessible to folks from out of state.

i haven't done anything about it though; life has been keeping me very occupied. if i thought durham could be a good host for the event i probably wouldn't hesitate to do it again. planning an out of town event is a different matter, however, and i'm not sure i want to.

i'd love to hear the thoughts of potential NBeast attendees. would you come (back) to durham? does asheville sound good? is there anyone who wants to help?

the other problem we *always* have is weather-- in october, there's always a gray sky over NBeast. it keeps people away. i was also thinking about moving it to late summer, although it's harder to dodge the other VW shows at that time.

anyway. tell me what you think.

Lisa,

i enjoyed last year's show. if it's in Durham again, i'll plan on being there.

i'll call Checkered Flag---i think they'd still be interested in supporting NBeast if it was held in/around Va Beach.

Virginia Beach hosts a huge soccer tournament over the Columbus Day weekend, so venues/hotels, etc. that weekend are hard to find ...i'll make a few calls, see what's available and what dates are better than others...will also call Yorktown...might be able to do something in the historic area. will post results.

just wondering, any other east coasters interested in hosting?

We're moving to a small farm in a couple weeks. I'd invite everyone there, but there's not a whole lot of touristy stuff nearby (not to mention things like restaurants, hotels, etc).

I agree with the October issue. The show should definitely be moved to either August or September.

One thought for those contemplating a future role with NBeast -- the original idea was for the show to move up & down the East Coast. So if someone wants to plan one in Florida or Cape Cod or anywhere else along the Coast, that would be in keeping with the show's intent

warren, i love the yorktown idea. jason took me up there once and i immediately thought it would be a great location for nbeast.

i have also thought that ft. monroe would be cool, although i am sure the army would think otherwise!

gina-- responding to you now.

actually, there have been GTGs at the Fortress in years past. local corvair club was here regularly.

since i work at Monroe, i'll check with the base operations folks to see what hoops we might have to jump through to have it here. may be nothing more than getting a day pass at the gate.

it pays to have someone on the inside! and in this case... inside is literal.

we could have a show-and-shine at ft. monroe, and then do a cruise on the parkway after lunch or something. that could be sweet.

i think having a full-fledged car show with classes and a bunch of trophies is overkill for the scale of NBeast. a show-and-shine, with maybe having visitors vote on a favorite, is probably as ambitious as we should really be.

What's the average number of cars that attend? I know numbers have started to dwindle a little bit, but I'm pretty positive we could get a good number of people together with enough notice (I'm assuming these plans we're talking about is for 08). Maybe we could do multiple special awards; nothing boring like "best paint" or "best interior", but fun awards like "best use of antenna" or something.

haha don't use that, please.

IIRC, NBeast numbers ranged from 30-35 (first two years) to around 20 or so NBs last year. didn't attend NBeast #3 in Luray.

umm. and i think i just assumed we were planning for this fall.

given it's June already, a more informal NBeast might be a great way to go for 07...i'll know more about site availability at Fort Monroe and Yorktown tomorrow.

Cruising the Colonial Parkway is a great idea.

fun awards like "best use of antenna." i like it...we'll have to use it.

Oh. Well ok, I guess we could do a fall thing. If you wanted to move the date up, August is definitely better than September. Sept already has the BugOut and H2O up here in VA and MD, respectively. ASAIK, there aren't any shows really in August in the mid-atlantic/capital area. Or we could just keep it in October. If we wanted to do it this year though, we better get some solid plans ASAP so people have plenty of time to plan.

Update...

Fort Monroe: October dates are the only real option. I'm going at lunch today to look at the picnic area I was offered. It's got a grill, covered seating area, and is near the beach. Rental is $90, and we'd need to put down a deposit to guarantee the reservation.

Yorktown: Plenty of dates available...only bad dates so far: Sep 1-3 (Labor Day) and Oct 19-21 (Yorktown Day Celebration). Parks representative sounds excited about working with us...there's a grassy area on the Yorktown Riverwalk we can use for NBeast. It's adjacent to the Riverwalk parking garage, so there's overhead cover available in case of bad weather. Yorktown Beach is just down the road, as is the Yorktown Pub.

A number of places to eat at/near Riverwalk (and a few gift shops). Historic area, Yorktown Battlefield and Victory Center, and Colonial Parkway are close by.

here's the riverwalk website http://www.yorkcounty.gov/riverwalk/business1.htm

IMO, Yorktown is by far the better choice.

Thoughts?

I'm not really familiar with anything in Southern VA, so I'll have to take your word for it How big is this grassy area in Yorktown? And are we leaning towards August or October?

Thanks for doing the research Warren! You rock!

Gina,

i've gotta go look at it. Cheryl told me 30-35 cars can fit with no worries...

in terms of giving people as much time as possible to put plans in place, i guess i'm still thinking october.

but maybe you, lisa and i (and whoever else wants to play <hint> <hint> ) should meet up in chat soon to kick it around a little more?

You can find me in chat M-F 9am-4pm

October sounds good to me, keep in mind there is already a VW show around the 21st though.
