Just for your information.... there is an upcoming recall on VW brake-lights. NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Around 800,000 Volkswagen vehicles have been recalled Monday because of faulty brake lights, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said . The 790,000 vehicles include Jettas, New Beetles, Golfs, GTIs and R32s. The specific years and models affected are 1999-2005 Jetta sedans, 2001-2005 Jetta wagons, 1998-2007 New Beetle, 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertibles, 1999-2006 Golfs and GTIs and the 2004 R32, all in the United States. The malfunctioning brake lights and brake light switches could fail to come on or remain stuck on. This recall expands on one announced by Europe's No. 1 carmaker last year, when 362,000 Jettas and New Beetles were recalled due to the same defective part. Volkswagen said that dealers will immediately be prepared to accept service appointments to perform the repair at no charge, but the notification process isn't scheduled to begin until April. NHTSA did not say if any injuries had been reported linked to the defective brake lights. |

I just saw this on the news - thought you'd all like to know.
www.kstp.com Channel 5 news in Minneapolis/St. Paul Volkswagen recalls 790,00 cars WASHINGTON (AP) - Volkswagen of America Inc. said Monday it would recall 790,000 vehicles because of problems with the brake light switch. The recall involves several vehicles: 1999-2006 model years of the Golf and GTI, 2001-2005 Jettas, 2001-2007 New Beetles and the 2004 R32. It expands upon a recall announced last year of some Jettas and New Beetles because of the same defect. Volkswagen told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the brake light switches in the vehicles could malfunction if they were improperly installed. The automaker said the light could either remain on or not function, which would fail to provide other motorists with the proper braking signal and potentially lead to a crash. In some vehicles with automatic transmissions, a faulty brake light could work in tandem with the shift interlock to immobilize the vehicle and require towing, said VW spokesman Keith Price. Last year, VW recalled 362,000 Jetta and New Beetle sedans because of similar problems with the brake lights. That recall affected Jettas from the 1999-2002 model years and New Beetles from the 1998-2002 model years. Price said the latest recall is an extension of the previous one because the company "found that there was a broader pool of vehicles that had the defective part." He said owners of 2001-2002 Jettas and New Beetles who already had the repairs completed following last year's recall would not need to return for a second time. VW dealers will install the newly designed brake light switch free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in late April and owners may contact VW with questions at 800-822-8987.

So is this a new recall or just people finally catching on and announcing it in the media? I got my recall letter Saturday but I have already had mine replaced...

This already happened to me "In some vehicles with automatic transmissions, a faulty brake light could work in tandem with the shift interlock to immobilize the vehicle and require towing, said VW spokesman Keith Price."
My 2002 would not come out of park, I think in November, I'll have to find the receipt. It was out of warranty so I had to pay for it. I just had it in last week and it was replaced again because of the recall. I am going to call VW and find out if they will reimburse for the repair from last year. Doubt it but worth a try. I also have a 2003 and for some reason the key for my 2002 will pick up the signal for the 2003 and then it can open both cars. VW reporgrammed the 2002 but had to also reprogram the 2003 to get it to stop. Well it happened again. What's the deal? |

Funny i just got a recall notice for the pre-2002 Beetle brake light problem. I had already fixed it out of warranty a number of times. IIRC, there was already a recall for that item that i had fixed. I guess i'll have to dig up all of my old receipts and get a reimbursement.
Since then, i traded for a 2006 Beetle convertible. Am i to understand that i should be expecting another recall notice for my new car?? ![]() |
