Default Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Returns for Summer 2011

Quote:
Just in time for the Spring thaw, Volkswagen has announced the return of the Golf Cabriolet. Extending the Golf range to one more model, the Cabriolet hasn’t been offered since the Mark III generation, over a decade ago.

Powered by a range of engines, including VW’s 200-hp GTI powerpant as well as the torque-filled TDI, the ‘Cab’ gets a soft top roof that can open or close in just 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 20-mph.

Standard features include LED taillights, an automatically-deploying roll-over bar and stability control. As VW cheekily points out in its press release, however, a sunroof will not be offered.

On sale in Germany starting tomorrow, expect an announcement from VW of America about the Golf Cabriolet’s return to our shores. And be sure to check back March 1st for coverage of the car’s official world premiere at the Geneva Auto Show.

That is NOT and EOS. The EOS is B6(2006-2010) Passat based and this is Mk5/mk6 Golf bassed. This car is also about 9 inches shorter than an Eos. The Eos also has a power folding hard top with a build in sunroof while this one has a regular folding fabric roof. The Eos starts upwards of $30k and can easily cross the $40k bracket for a fully loaded model while this car can start in the high teens to lower $20k.

This car, so to speak, replaces the beetle convertible like the beetle convertible replaced the Cabrio in 2003.

Also note that that article states that there are no plans to import this Golf Cabrio to the US.

If it came, i'd guess the 115hp 2.0 that Vw used for years would be the standard powerplant. The 5cyl 2.5 would be the uplevel option for it. I don't see the 2.0T getting any use here as that would make it cost roughly the same as a base Eos.

Ok, I believe you. It's not an Eos. But when looking at the photo, it looks exactly like one, when considering that there would be no way to tell that this car is 9 inches shorter or has a fabric roof unless an Eos was parked right next to it.

Also, unless there are no plans for a 2012+ Beetle convertible in Europe, this is not a replacement convertible. I confess I didn't read the article that accompanied the photo, so maybe that's the case.

This car is not a replacement for the Beetle cabrio. That is coming later this year... and the North American market will probably be the first to have it. Just like the beetle itself :-d
