Volkswagen Beetle R in the Works - autoevolution

Sure someone posted this somewhere, but must be lost in a thread, thought I would post here.

Volkswagen Beetle R in the Works

It's only two days since the New Beetle has been unveiled by German manufacturer Volkswagen, and already countless reports have described and analyzed the model perhaps more than any other car launched this year. This is, of course, because the Beetle has been one of the most anticipated VW models in years.

At first sight, the New Beetle comes with the promise of being capable of much more than the generation currently on sale. And we're not talking here about the engine choices or the design lines chosen for the model, but about the frenzy which surrounded the its launch. A frenzy which might preview a car that will be remembered and cherished decades from now.

And since the Beetle caused quite some stir, Volkswagen insiders dropped another bomb on Wednesday, through Car and Driver. According to the publication, the New Beetle might get an even more juicier version, one that will wear the “R” which stands for high performance in the Volkswagen lineup.

According to the source, the R version of the Beetle will be powered by a 2.0l engine, turbocharged and tweaked into developing 266 hp and 350 Nm of torque.

Now, none of the above has been officially confirmed, but judging by the huge range of engines offered to go with the model in markets around the world (in Europe, the Beetle will come with three petrol and two diesels, while in the US it will sell with two petrol and a TDI), it appears VW expects great sales numbers to come with the Beetle. And with those numbers, comes the need for a high-performance version.

Awesome I would love one of those if gas wasn't so insane. I'll just have to go with a TDI unless I have a crazy short commute.

I have heard tons of folks talking about getting one with a TDI - must be a sign of the gas prices! LOL
I remember when they had the model of the TSI at the autoshows years ago thinking that was the best sounding idea for an engine (gas that is)...so excited to see what they actually deliver to the showrooms.

I've always wanted a TDI even when gas wasn't insane, although with how it is now it makes me want one even more.

I was excited to hear that they brought the base 2.0l turbo back with the new engine line-up.

Now, this news is even better. Wow, that will be a fun one to drive...

Default Naming tribulations...

I agree!

I feel the "performance stream" should be named as follows:

2.0 T 200+hp: Turbo
2.0 T 265hp: Turbo S
2.5 T 335hp: .:R (or Turbo R)

Talking of naming, I like what VW has done with the "Turbo" badge typeface, no more a "homage" pastiché to the legendary 911 turbo graphic but a brand new individualised style unique the Bug that looks classic in its own right:

Classic enough to go with those BRM sty...I mean Fuchs style wheels...

Cheers mrchaotica, good spot!

A real .:R has to have 4WD IMHO, just like how Audi see Quattro as essential equipment in their RS series. I guess that's why I see the Scirocco "R" as a travesty, much like the current Ford Focus RS with it's rubbish FWD "Revoknuckle" cop-out.

+1!

For me at least, the perfect equation would be: .:R+4WD+5zyl^335=Perfection!

Then

An R Beetle would definitely be AWD. That's the point.

It's pretty safe to say you won't see the 2.5T in the Beetle though. It will probably just be a Beetle version of the Golf R.

What makes you think that? There has never been an VW R-badged car that was FWD why would they change that now?

Well that would be a disappointment. Agree that if it's supposed to be an R model, then it needs to be AWD.

Hope that was a misprint by VW. Guess we will have to wait until the spec sheet comes out on this platform to confirm.

its definately going to be FWD, based on the scirrocco R, which is fwd...

although awd would be badass, this bug would be 40k

this way it will stay affordable for me
