Unhappy Sad Day

I will be saying good bye to you all for a while. (At least until I get another NB!) On Friday morning my NB, Beehive, experienced an engine fire and is beyond my means to repair. I am taking over my wife's Scion for the moment and she is getting a new Saab convertible tonight.

I just wanted to say that this is the nicest place on the Web and you have all added to my enjoyment of owning a NB this past year. (I may be trading in the Scion for a used Turbo Sport! But I am not sure if I can swing that and the new Saab!)

See you all around!

Jim

So sorry to hear about Bee. Like Amy said, you don't have to have an NB to visit, you just have to like them! I hope no one was hurt. Do you know what caused the fire?

So sorry to hear that.

But just cause you won't have a NB for awhile, doesn't mean you can't stick around. Maybe we can help you hang in there until you get another one!

How awful! Sorry to hear about your NB.

As stated above, the Org is for owners ~and~ enthusiasts. So, stick around.

What caused the fire? We would like to know...

Thursday night I noticed an electrical engine sound coming through the radio speakers. I thought I needed new wires and a tune up so I ignored it. Then I noticed that the air conditioner was blowing warm air.

On Friday morning, I was still getting the "electrical" engine sound through the radio and the air conditioner didn't seem as cold as usual. I got on the Expressway, brought the car up to 60 mph, when all of a sound I got this weird vibration from the front of the car (so bad that the glove box door bounced open!). I heard this bang and woooosh sound and then everything smoothed out, at first I thought everything was going to be okay, but then I noticed this ploom of white/gray smoke shooting out of the back of the car! People were slamming on their brakes, hitting their horns etc... (this was the middle of rush hour going towards NY City!)

I pulled over and luckily a cop was at the exit, he runs over with a fire extinguisher and puts out the fire. Fortunately no one was hurt in all of the excitement. It ended up that I had a short in my air conditioning compressor (electrical sound through radio), the compressor froze (belt still running causing the vibration), I burnt out it's clutch (engine smoothed out)and the short evidently caused the electrical fire (mixed with the freon escaping from the compressor made a hell of a fog bank!).

After all of this I actually drove the car to a local dealership where my friend is a mechanic. Book value on car is approx $5k but air conditioner parts and repairs to engine compartment would be more than $2,000 - still needed to do the timing belt - brakes - etc.... and I owe another 4 years on the loan!

My friend was able to clean up the car so visually there is no evidence of any fire and to get the blower to work (so it seems that the AC works if you don't check too carefully) and to clear any/all of the codes that came up. So I quickly traded it in Saturday afternoon to another dealership, while everything looked good! They actually gave me $500 over book paying off my loan!

Thats the story!

Sorry this happened, but glad neither you nor anyone else was hurt.

Ditto what Amy and Debbie said...you don't have to leave us.

Dealers take cars in trade to make it easier for you to buy their new cars. Anything too old or too rough for their lot goes to dealer auction where "as-is" and "caveat emptor" are the operative phrases. The way dealers play games with costs and prices, I wouldn't pity them taking your Bug in trader.

Besides, anyone who buys a used car without getting it checked out by a indepedent mechanic is asking for trouble.

One thing I just noticed....you owed another 4 years on a car only worth $5k?!?!? I hope you are planning to AGGRESSIVELY pay down the loan on the new Saab or at least pay off the Scion if it isn't already, because it sounds like you are starting out BIG TIME upside down in the new ride. I hope not, but I've seen many people screw themselves into the ground trading cars that aren't paid off.
