Default My NB's picture was in the paper!

Sorry if the thread title sounds cheesy but I'm really excited about it. I was reading the paper this morning and was suprised to find that along with the Bugtoberfest article, there was also a picture of me polishing Wilson, my NB. I posted the entire article as well as the picture. The Central Arkansas Volks Folks VW club should be posting more pictures on their site soon. Hopefully some of you can make it to next years show.

Lovable bugs; blue skies
Volks Folks have fun, raise money for Hospice
By RACHEL PARKER
LOG CABIN STAFF WRITER

Bug lovers from several states converged at Toad Suck Park on Saturday for Bugtoberfest.
The annual Volkswagen car show was sponsored by the Central Arkansas Volks Folks, and all proceeds will go to Arkansas Hospice.

"They've been our charity for the past three years," said Dave Osborne, president of the club. He said trophies would be awarded for 20 different classes of vehicles. All makes and models of Volkswagens are welcome at the show, both old and new.
"We have at least 57 cars. We're down a little bit, but at $3 a gallon, people don't travel like they used to," he said. Entries came from Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas, he said.

"We couldn't ask for a prettier day, and everything's been great," he added.

Among the rows of vehicles displayed sat Wende Thornton of Sheridan and Stacy Gossett of Mayflower with Thornton's 1971 Super Beetle. The car is light yellow with brown doors and black interior.

Thornton and Gossett both work at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. Thornton bought the car shortly before being sent to Iraq for six months to work as a civilian supporting a team looking for weapons of mass destruction, she said.

While she was gone, Gossett and a friend, Sean Emanuel, restored the engine. When Thornton returned, she restored the interior.

Gossett said the car has new trim, carpet, stereo, tires, brakes, bumpers and chrome.

"It just came back to life. It has a new, old look."

Bugtoberfest was the second car show the two had attended with the Beetle. They plan to enter a show in Fort Worth, Texas, on Nov. 5.

Scott and Debbie Bell of Beebe entered an olive green 1978 Westfalia camper in the show.

The camper has its original olive plaid interior. For decoration, Debbie added a picnic basket with artificial fruit and a German banner.

The couple have been Volkswagen enthusiasts for some time, having owned 1962 and 1969 Beetles, a 1973 bus as well as a new, 2004 Beetle. They have had the camper for six years, Scott said. He explained how he found it.

"I literally found it in a barn. A lady owned it in Beebe. It belonged to her son. I drove by every day on the way to work and saw the back end of it. My curiosity got the best of me and I had to go in and ask about it."

The camper's engine was still running, Scott said. He replaced the battery, tires, shocks, brakes and a few rubber pieces that had gotten dry, he said.

Debbie said the camper needed some cleaning.

"It had mice nests in the heater hoses, it had been out in the barn so long. You'd turn on the heater and you could smell the straw."

Scott said most Volkswagen enthusiasts name their vehicles, and the green camper's name is Gumby. He produced a stuffed Gumby doll from inside the camper.

"This is an everyday vehicle for me. It's what we call a daily driver," he said. "They're (Volkswagens) a lot of fun. It's kind of a unique brand of vehicle because they make so many (models). It's got a long history."

Congratulations to both of you.

I'm sure the photographer saw pretty girl, cute car, great photo. Please next time you polish your car move the key ring to a loop on the back of the pants. I look at the photo and cringe thinking how much is that ring swinging. Yeah I'm gettin old, look at a photo with a pretty girl and see the keyring.

thanks. I didn't even notice the keys until you said something. I'm always paranoid about losing them so I often keep them in my pocket.

Congratulations! I was really sorry I wasn't able to make it up to the show, but at least a couple of people from the Tulsa club were able to enter. Even one of the New Beetles, at that! I asked them if you had been there, but I had forgotten that Wilson is yellow, and I asked them if there was a white NB in the show. I'm glad you at least made it. It's in your town, after all!

Are those Rave wheels!?! I thought I was the only one with those! Okay, not really, but I don't see them often.

Sorry you weren't able to make it Beetlemania. I hope you can come next year, I really want to see your car. Which New Beetle belonged to your club? There weren't very many New Beetles there. Yup, those are Raves and I thought I was the only one who had them. I've seen maybe two with Raves.

I heard the show might be moved to Hot Springs at some point. Is that true? I guess time will tell. I like that the cars were set up in the grass. As long as it's well manicured, and the weather stays dry, that makes for a nice setting.

There was a couple in an Aquarius Blue 'vert that says Topless along the top of the windshield. Everyone from the Tulsa club that was there gave a good report at our last club meeting. I hope we'll have even better participation next year. I'll try my best to join in!
