Default how much do you work?

ok, i am not going to post my answer first, but i was wondering, given an 8 hour day (assuming you work full time), how many of those hours are you actually working? please be honest! now, it doesn't matter if 1) you're just a slacker or 2) your job doesn't give you enough to do, i am just curious to know what part of your work day you actually spend doing work. you'll have to round up or down, depending. please submit hours worked, generally speaking, over the course of a year, per day.

for example: on the average day, all things being equal, i work about 4 out of 8 hours of the day.

i just wanna compare.

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

I probably work about 7 1/2 hours out of my 9 hour day. I spend all my time working on the computer so it's easy for me to switch back and forth between here and my work.

It really depends on how much work I have to do, and how far off the deadlines are. The Architecture world isn't a production line (well, some are but not what I do). I could work all day on drawings, accomplishing tons, or I could be running around just looking for correct code information, be stuck on the phone all day talking to contractors and clients, or I could be inbetween projects with not a thing to do. I could also be twiddling my thumbs waiting for information from outside engineers... who knows...

For the most part, conversation in the office rarely strays from the job at hand, and the principles of the company watch everyone like hawks. Our timesheets are segmented down to every half hour, with an appropriate billing/task code for each and every item we work on.

it's pretty laid back here where i work. my boss works about 90 miles away, too, so take that as you will. it's kind of feast or famine here. i primarily work on projects, so sometimes in between projects, there's nothing. and when my boss doesn't have anything for me to do, there's no "busy work" to be had. when there's nothing, there's really nothing.

many of us (except for our operations dept - the phones, data entry types) are not "watched" and are salaried. we don't have time sheets. i work with sales people, and although i am not in sales myself, i adopt their policies for time management.

We are all salaried as well, the timesheet is to track how much time is spent on a job. It gives the marketing branch a better idea of what it costs the company to put out work. Allows them to come up with a cost for us to bid on a project. It also allows the accounting department to directly bill the client for services.

Where I work (at the bank) we don't go home until everything is done. Whether it's 8pm, or 1am. (Think: do you want us to process the deposit you made today, tomorrow?) We are also under deadline.

For example, yesterday. One coworker in hospital. One on vacation. One called in sick. I was paid for 10 hours, actually "worked" for 8.5. The other 1.5: breaks, end of day stuff (computer back-ups, clean-up, assorted chores we have to do before we can leave), equipment malfunction,.....fun stuff! I finally left work at midnight.

Most days, I have about 2 hours worth of work. I sit here on the net the rest of the day. It gets boring. However I love it here.

There are some days (few and far between) where I'm running full steam from the time I arrive until I leave. That's really rare though.

I said 3, which is right for much of the year. when the legislature is in session, and these guys tear up their computers, it's more like 7. But when they do call me into action, their need is immediate, so they don't mind paying me.

ok good, so i am not the only one. most days here, i put in only a few hours, but there are often two days of the week i work all day, through lunch and everything. i love my job, too, but could stand more to do. since my boss isn't here, it's hard for her to always have things for me to do.
