Default Girls-- any fashion experts here?

My problem: my son is getting married June 8, and I still don't have a dress to wear. The event's a pretty formal, evening wedding, and the bridesmaids are wearing strapless black dresses, although they are not floor-length. Bride's mom is wearing a long black skirt with a sparkly black top under a white organza jacket thing. Here's where the wedding will be http://www.pmhouston.com/

I'm not very confident with shopping in any event- my job and lifestyle allow for pretty casual attire- and I have no idea what kind of dress to buy. I made the mistake of trying to research on the net- the guidelines I found said the mother of the groom should "Show up, shut up, wear beige." I won't have trouble with the first two, but I hate beige. It also said I shouldn't wear the same color as the mother of the bride or the bridesmaids... but I don't want to be the only one in the pictures wearing say, bright red, when everyone else is in black/white.

And if anyone wants a weekend hire job as the mother of the groom, let me know. I just might pay good money I'll be glad when this is over!

I have three weddings in the near future so I have had this problem myself. I'm very interested in fashion and designers and usually what you want to wear to a Formal Evening Wedding is something Long or a very dressy short cocktail gown.

I know that Ann Taylor has a line of dresses specifically for Wedding Guests which are very nice:

Also you could purchase a bridesmaid dress, no one will ever know:

Don't worry about wearing the same color as the mother of the bride or bridesmaids. There is bound to be another person wearing it. Also Bridal Salons usually sell "Mother of the" dresses, but typically they are expensive. Hope that helps! I'm sure I'll think of other website links later on.

I agree that Ann Taylor has some great dresses. If you are thinking about buying from there, sign up for the e-mails, they send out great coupons!

Please don't wear beige!!! No one looks good in that color, it really washes out the color in people.

How about deep shades? Maybe dark blue or something. Did you try looking at David's Bridal? You could buy something off the rack.

Good luck!!!

Thanks, girls... there are some really pretty dresses at Ann Taylor. I just wish I was a size 6 - I guess I'm worried about my much more 'average' figure and I'll definitely want something with some kind of sleeves. I appreciate the help! I'd probably pay whatever the co$$$t if I found a dress that made me look like the AT models

NORDSTROM WEDDING SHOP: MOTHER OF THE BRIDE/GROOM
Hey!!! Thanks! There are several dresses there that I might wear. I guess it wouldn't be too scary ordering that way as long as I allowed plenty of time to return for another size if it didn't fit. I am REALLY limited as far as shopping in my area-- there's only a Dillards, and it's not a particularly good one at that.

Good luck in finding your perfect mother of the groom dress/outfit!

It's amazing to see that the stores have special sections for the "mothers of the...."
