First day of school

Today is my kids first day of school and its going to be 102F hot and humid! Don't know why they just don't start on Monday? Anyone elses kids going off to school today?

Jeez!! Thats early! The kids here dont start till the beginning of September!

Yea! That is sooo early!! I always started after Labor Day and always a Tuesday... why a Thursday...? Strange...

When I read that I got that weird first day of school feeling... LOL!

When do your kids get out? Is this unusual weather for your area for this time of year? How long is the school year, in days? How long are the various school holidays?
All these things are taken into account when the school board, either state or local, sets the calender. Well, except for the current weather. But local climate conditions are often taken into account in setting the school year. Calendars are often set 1-2 years in advance of the current schol year.
The day school starts on is determined by all the above, and more, most likely. Ask the school or school board how they set the school calendar, and let them know your concerns.

School used to start late when I was a kid, and as time went on it started earlier and earlier. Texas has decided to not allow classes to start until a certain date so now school will start later now.

Class for me starts Aug 27th also, which happens to be my 2 yr anniversary. So yeah, I'll be in class. Maybe I'll get a massage when I get home

They added 4 days to the school year this year. The last day of school is May 23, so I guess they wanted to end it before memorial day.

My daughter starts August 22nd but freshman orientation is the 19th. The school has AC so they should be fine. When I was a kid we never went back before labor day.

I start August 20th...but it's all DDP (distance degree program) I'm halfway done with my BA in Human Resource Management and Personnel Psychology.

I teach grade four (my 5th year of teaching hoorah!) and we start after the long weekend in September. Our school year goes from Sept 4th to June 28th. I find it quite long, but I guess it is average...

I work at a coffee shop in the summer. How funny is that!?

I got that first day of school feeling too when I read this. It made me sad and nostalgic and it made my intestines contract a bit. I thought I was going to have to run for the bathroom. I might still...

My daughter starts August 27th, she goes for a half day and then has the 28th off, then starts full days on the 29th. She gets done the first week of June because she is a senior the rest of the school goes through the 2nd week of June for exams only.

My college starts in a week or two. The highschool down the street started yesterday, I noticed because of all the dreaded traffic...

But some school district's here are going back the 27th. I think it sucks. I've never heard of schools starting before the holiday weekend.

I am SO glad I don't have to go back to school this fall!

The preferential school district here (there are 3 in the area) extended their school year to maximize state funds. School starts Aug 20 and ends June 6. There are more vacation days in the middle to deal with those days where attendance is poor. The kids get the entire week off for Thanksgiving as an example. Too much absenteeism occurs that week, which means funds from the state are reduced when kids don't go to school. The Monday after Easter is also a vacation day for the same reason. Individual days are also given to accomodate staff development day, when many kids won't attend if the parents know they get 1/2 of that day anyway. The number of teaching days I believe is 185.

Informative! But you forgot the best part....YAY! Kids going BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh good! School is starting. That means the Kids and I will have the parks to ourselves again.

Although they are quite sick of people asking me if I can't wait until September.

Weird.. some of the districts here are thinking about doing the opposite. They currently get a week for Thanksgiving but they may go to just having Thur and Fri off. I guess we'll have to see how that works out
