Red face Is it expensive to get an iPod fixed?

I know it's probably going to depend on what exactly is wrong with it but does anyone have an idea what they might charge me at the Apple store? It plays fine, I can hook it up to my Zip Connect on my iPod Stereo/CD player but my computer doesn't recognize it. I think it says something like "USB device isnt working properly and windows cannot detect it" or some crap like that and I cant get it to update or anything. I've reset it. Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and that wont work either. I have tried every troubleshooting idea Apple has given me and it still wont work so I figured I would take it to the experts. I dont think its covered under warranty anymore. I've had it for over a year now and I registered it but the Apple website cant seem to find my warranty
Anyway...long story short it needs fixin' and I can't afford to spend a lot to get it fixed at the moment since there are much more pressing issues to be dealt with
Input?
Thanks in advance

It could be a bad cable or your usb port. Have you tried it on a different computer or with a different cable?

It's not the port because I have a few other ports on my computer and they all say the same thing. I havent tried another cable. Maybe I'll do that 1st. Could it be the connection on the iPod?

Yes, it could be the connector on the ipod came loose from the board inside.

Oh wait...Im thinkin it wouldnt be that either if it works with the Zip connect. thats the only way I have to charge it and with that I can control the iPod through the remote from the stereo and that still works too so Im guessing its the cable. I'll have to ask my friend if I could borrow hers before I go out and buy another one.

Thanks Dave!

Are you using USB 2.0? I know this has been a big problem with PC users using iPods. Take it to the genius bar in an apple store. They're great and will let you know what's wrong. It could be a simple fix and this will not cost you anything.

It's an update for USB ports...although, if it worked and then all of a sudden stopped working, it doesnt really make much sense that it was that. But you could check into it.

This is a few years ago though, my info might not be completely up-to-date. I don't want to give you wrong info.

First guess: Cable. Second guess: Docking Station.

Do you dock the iPod into a Docking Station? Usually white, and makes the iPod stand up.

Sometimes the cable that plugs into the back of that can get louse.

It could be just your cable has given up the ghost.

Or it could be your iPod finally rejecting the indignity of having to sync up with a PC...

(Kidding on that last one)

Funny guy, that TJ!

I dont use a docking station. iPod goes straight to PC.

I'll check the cable. Sounds like thats what it might be...I hope anyway Are the cables expensive? I wouldnt think so...

Thanks TJ

I don't suspect the cable is expensive.

Apple Dock Connector to USB Cable

Use the Dock Connector to USB Cable to charge and sync your iPhone or iPod with your Mac or Windows PC.
Price: $19.00

Just to clarify a couple of points. You cannot "update" usb ports, the difference between usb 1.1 and usb 2.0 is hardware, not software! If you have a computer with usb 1.1 ports, you can UPGRADE, which means , buying a USB 2.0 PCI card that installs into the back of your computer, OR, if it's a laptop, you buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card..

Also, you say you have had your iPod for over a year and I'm assuming you've had it connected to your computer before. Which leads me to believe it's just the cable itself. But, What I would do if your going to the Apple store, is take your docking station, your cables, and your ipod, and they will test them for you free of charge at the Genius Bar.

Sometimes cables go bad.
