my girl Applescruff is here with me, and she's the expert.

She claims that, if Harry were alive in our world and aged from when the first book was released to today, the actual aging from that first year would make him 27 or something like that. She says it comes from the fact that there's 7 books covering 7 years, released one every few years or so.

just a theory though.

Might also have come from the given birthdate for Harry- I don't have my book here, but I think it is supposed to be 1980 or 1981. I'm pretty sure that JK Rowling never gives a "current date" for the story itself- but if someone was assuming that the newest book is written in current time, they might think Harry was 27. Rowling has never wanted to pin the story down to a concrete timeline, though. Harry is definitely 17 years old in story-time. There, that's as clear as mud

But the books are written as if the events from the previous book were 1 year ago from the book that follows it.

Harry is 17 years old.

Each book covers about a year of time. Starts the summer before the school year and ends at the end of the school term.

Harry was 10 when the books started. There were 7 books. 10 + 7 = 17.

People are adding in the amount of "real" time between books being written / published.

However, this is make believe. The characters don't actually age during the time it takes a book to be written and published.

She does give dates of death for his parents and since harry was 1 year old when they died.... the math is pretty easy.

To be technically correct, Harry Potter is 36 years old at the close of the series

Actually Tom, this is where the confusion comes in. JK wrote that his parents died in 1981 in the last book. Since the books take place in current time, meaning the last one took place in 2007, and Harry was one year old in 1981, that makes him born in 1980, which in turn makes him 27 years old. This was an obvious typo that was not caught by the editors. And you know these books take place in current time based on the "toys" that Dudley has.

C'mon, a bit of literary license, please? J.K. meant Harry to be 17 in Book 7.

There were a number of gaffs listed by fans and critics, but they never spoiled the stories for me.

I know that JK meant for him to be 17 in Book 7. I was just saying that the dates on the tombstones didn't make sense, thats all and where the confusion could have occurred. I didnt mean he was 27 in the books.

My point is, Karen, with all of the "mistakes," didn't you enjoy the book? (This is a rhetorical question, since you're probably a bigger Potter fan than many, including myself.)

er.. Harry Potter drives a 'Firebolt', one of the most expensive, and fastest, brooms in all of existance. Capable of reaching 150mph in 10 seconds, according to magical sources.

And yes... that's the "real" info on the firebolt

Super-dupah-fly-ride....

Of course, at his 18th Birthday , Daniel Radcliffe is recieving 41 million dollars, now that' he's an "adult".

Man. He'll be driving anything he wants!!

... Which toys were those? Computers and Video games were around in the 90's... unless JK Rowling specifically mentioned that dudley had a Wii or an Xbox360, or PS3.... I do not agree with this statement at all.

I'm a bit confused by the "occurs in real time". The first book was released in 1997. So is the real time then?

Or is the real time now, as in 2007?

That's 10 years between books, but supposed to span 7 years.

So not sure why we think the books all occur in our current times?
