Cool If you could fly...

One of mankind's greatest fantasies is about having the ability to fly...If you could fly, who would you want to fly like?

Maybe you'd want to fly direct like Superman, Mighty Mouse or Neo,swoop like Batman, swing like Spiderman, flit about like Tinkerbell. Me, I'd likely be like Wiley Coyote (thank you, ACME)...

If you've ever seen the movie "Those Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines," there is a flash-forward at the end with a fed-up Spike Jones standing in an airport baggage claim. He begins flapping his elbows and gradually he turn into a cartoon and goes flying around. I have had lots of dreams that started like this- a lot of ungainly flapping and then big swooping arm motions. Sometimes it is just a really good jump, after which it works something like flubber in the Absent-Minded Professor. I would like this sort of stealth flight better than Superman-style. It seems almost plausible (well- at least in a dream)

In my flying dreams I always run really fast until I get enough lift, then I kind of swim my way through the air.

I hope I have one of those dreams tonight!!!

i used to have them same type of flying dream when i was a kid.

i would run as fast as i could, sometimes i would land face first int he dirt.

there were also midgets in holloween costumes in that dream, and land sharks, and a stagecoach.

now that i think of it, i should be committed.

When I dream I'm flying (and it's been a while, so I'm sure I'm due for one of those) it doesn't take any arm flapping at all. It's really terribly simple to do, too bad I forget how after I wake up All it takes is a very deep breath, and the effect is like I was filling up with helium. My feet just lift off the ground and I start floating up. I do have to concentrate on taking 'proper' flying breaths then, because if I don't I float back down. After a while of this, and getting to considerable height, I'm able to maneuver and zoom about like Superman/woman and have a total blast

Who would I fly like? There is this guy named Jurgis Kairys - probably him - check it out. Shaun Tucker or Delmar Benjamin are also good ones. Space shuttle astronauts get a heckuva ride. In the animal world a Peregrine or Gyrfalcon probably can't be beat. Nature is cruel though so I think I'll stay human.

I had the "run as fast as you can and take off dreams" as a kid. For the life of me I can't bring one on again. One of the worst costs of growing up I think!

P.S. about that skydiving thing - In the words of Woody from toy story - "That's not flying that's falling with style!"

Hey Bill-

Now THAT'S flying! I'm trying to convince my wife to let me get an ultralight soon... Of course she rejected the idea out of shear fear of flying herself, but I figure I just bought her the dream NBC she wanted, so now she CAN'T say no, right??!!

Oh... If I could fly...Well, like you Bill, I do on occassion, but to me the ultimate would be to Captain the Space Shuttle... Went to KSC this summer... Still drooling! The pics were taken by my son when I got my first flight in an open cockpit bipe while in FL... 1/2 an hour at the controls- what a kick in the pants!!

Chris
