Default Another homowner (pending)- omg!!!

Wow! I can't believe that we are actually going to get this gorgeous house. I have the inspection set up for tomorrow, Sep 4. Shouldn't have any issues.

Sorry I've been away from the forums a bit. This is the reason why. This house is owned by the Veterans Affairs, and it took two stomach-wrenching, nail-biting weeks for them to get back to us to even say whether they accept or reject our offer. TWO WEEKS!!!! over all, it was worth jumping through hoops. There's no way on planet earth we could afford a house anywhere close to this nice had it been owned by an actual person. VA is like a foreclosure owned by a gov entity.

We looked at dozens of houses, lost a couple, including a HUD home we bid high on and ended up with this beauty. my pics suck, but have a quick lookie.

It even comes with mismatching appliances! sweet! and the washer/dryer room is UPSTAIRS- where all the bedrooms are. that has to be one of my favorite features.

now i need to decide whether to hire someone to deep clean/sanitize the place or do it myself. i suck at housework so i don't know what the best approach would be to clean closets, pantries, and stuff like that.

the carpet has a couple of minor stains in it. i think i'm gonna buy a steam cleaner since i have a 2-year old but i don't know which kind deep cleans and gets rid of stains.... help

anybody got a powerwasher thingie to get the spraypaint off the driveway?

i suck at decorating, too. we went to Ikea and picked out some essentials so that's a start. i'm also gonna probably get a used slate pool table from craigslist or somewhere cause i will soon be broke(ish).

Oh My Gosh! That is gorgeous!

I know you will be OK with the cleaning and decorating. Everything always works out! At least, that is how it is working for me.

Big Congratulations! Gorgeous!

It's beautiful!!!!! Congratulations!!!! The steam cleaner should work fine. Sometimes on tough stains, you can get those carpet 'crystals' and lightly brush them out before using the steamer. Ha ha, I said steamer. LOL

I'm really happy for you and your family!!! It sounds like you went through a lot to get it, but it's well worth it!!!!

thanks alot, you guys!

don't any of you live closer so you we can celebrate and I could get decorating tips? I suck at decorating, too.

this house is gonna help clean out our savings since it's a little over what we planned to spend. i guess i'll have a big ole semi-empty house for a while. the first pieces of furniture i need are a coffee table and end tables, and a pool table. cause, you know pool table is really important and stuff like that... um. yeah. screw a dining table, i need a pool table.

i will keep you updated. it's not mine yet. if there's something this house is hiding that comes up on the inspection we may be back to square one.

Congrats. Personally, I would feel trapped there, your neighbors are what? 15' away? Isn't TX big? They should give out big lots!

It looks like a super nice home.

oh wow! congrats! and don't listen to bill about being cramped; our bedroom is 8 feet from our neighbors.

i'm so excited for you! IKEA is a great place to get started decorating. don't worry too much, you've got plenty of time to do stuff to your house.

looks like an excellent find!

keep this thread updated with pics!

shoot, i need to start my homeowner thread...LOL

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

congrats on the house!
For the paint on the driveway, try paint thinner, a soft wire brush, and a lot of elbow grease.

dude, i grew up in Japan. i can't touch the neighbor's window from leaning out of mine, and there are no other people directly on the other side of any wall. i thought briefly the same thing as you but the trade off is a big yard to mow. (it is hot as hell in texas- no big yards please)

my dad's $300,000 condo in Japan is probably not much more than half the size of my apartment/townhome! and he has on the other side of one wall i think, as well as people above and below him.

3 features i love about this house that most homo'sners don't like:
small yard
small bedrooms (frees up square footage for the gameroom)
no fireplace (fireplaces are retarded in texas, imo)

erin, get your face off the wall. we nearly bought one house that had a Jesus/Mary holograhpic thing (i dunno what you call it, but the eyes "followed" you. and they left it behind for some reason.)

gonna try the paint thinner thing. if that doesn't work, i need to find someone with a powerwasher.

i wish our yard was smaller, actually. it's not huge, but it's a lot for mike and i to maintain. i don't mind small. i really don't. my mission in life is not to have the biggest house possible.

Small houses are fine by me, but unless they have some elbow room around them I feel closed in. I guess that comes with growing up on 5 acres with farms around. Anything less than 2 acres or so feels cramped to me and I really enjoy my time while mowing/doing lawn work, because it gives me a chance to just clear my head and think about whatever while I'm riding on the tractor, pushing the trim mower and weedwhacking. My house is under 1000 sq.ft. on 4/10ths acre and it's plenty big for my wife and I and cats, but I get away to our 4.5 acre property in the country every day, whether it's just to walk around, or work on something--it keeps me sane. Congrats again on the house--it looks fantastic (I'd just need to move it to a bigger lot )

did you just say you enjoy doing yardwork? be glad you don't live close by, or i would kidnap you in a burlap sack and put you to work.

my house is 2470 sq foot. i almost went for another one in the same subdivision over 2800 sq foot. i think the lot size is the same cause that yard was almost non-existent. (the huge house needed a couple repairs and we probably couldn't afford the utilities and taxes even though the home was in our price range)

me likey me big house. (it's big by my standards- remember, i grew up in Japan.)

TJ, are you moving actually in Dallas city limits or a suburb? when will you be in the metroplex?

We had a bit of a setback, though. The closing costs are WAAAY more that we thought it would be and so now we have to deplete our enitre savings accounts.

We didn't have a fireplace in our first place in Irving, that was def. on the list for the house we currently are in now! Yeah, it's hot in Texas, but for those couple months that it is too cold to go outside, a nice toasty romantic fire sure is nice.

Congrats on the new house!

TJ's moving to Lewisville. And I have dibs on the pool!

Where is your new house located?

I don't mind mowing my lawn in the Texas heat...at least I get a little exercise that way.
