what UFOs were reverse engineered from

A friend of mine sent me this pic. Could this be what sparked the alien saucers that the New Beetle was based on? Roswell would be nothing without this piece of history!

It was done the first year. I wasn't there to see it in person, but I saw some pics of a woman from Chicago putting a billowing skirt on her silver Bug that made it look like a flying saucer. And I think she was parked next to another Beetle with the "stealth" paint on it. It looked like an empty parking space!
