Default Sweet temptation: 2008 New Beetle?

Someone stop me!
I've been toying with the idea of "downgrading" to a commuter-type car. My GLI will be 2 years old in two weeks and I have only 16,000 miles on it. My commute is 11 miles round trip and I only run errands in it. I'm thinking of selling both the GLI and Speed, as he is being quite needy recently. Here's some figures I came up with:
According to Edmunds.com,
- My GLI is worth $20,000, my payoff is $13,000 (might be a little less now), so there's $7000.
- Speed is worth roughly $5000.
That makes $12,000 to put towards a 2008 New Beetle.

Since I have quite a few parts that could be transfered to the 08 (my BRMs, roof rack and such), I would go with an "S" model, 5 speed, with an iPod hookup, sunroof, cold weather package, and Monster Mats. That comes to about $19,500. Take off the $12,000 I could potentially make, and I would only be financing $7,500. With 0% APR (current VW offer) it would put my payments at less than $150 a month (for 60 months). Heck, I could finance it for less time than that and pay a little more a month. On top of all that, a couple dealers offer fleet buyer discounts such as $99 or 1% over invoice.

Even without this, and keeping it at 60 months for financing, I would save almost $300 a month!

Soooo tempting!

Looks like you've got some work to do. Maybe you should let us help you pick out your "new" NB.

You'll miss the 2.0T. Sounds like people I know who've had a car payment all their life and have never ended up owning anything.

I know you love Speed. You will cry if you trade him in. Don't know about the GLI, 'tho. But, I do know this:

You need to get the new New Beetle, so you can get back to active at the Org!

Good luck to you.

The fastest I go is 40MPH! The turbo is barely kicking in. The down-low torque of the 5 cyl might actually feel peppier.

Well, I got Speed paid off in less than 4.5 years and I still have him. I was car payment free for almost two years. If I paid more than the minimum, I would have the new car paid off in probably 3 years. I could keep it for a while after that just like I did with Speed.

In the last 2 years my husband and I went from having 1 car payment, then to none, then to one, then to three, then back to two. He just had to have his Audi, then shortly after that the opportunity to get a NB arose. My truck was paid off. I sold it and used the money from that to pay off our home equity loan. We figured financing my car would be wiser to get the equity back into our home, especially now that our market sucks I know it the right thing to do. You can take your car payments with you when you move, but you can't take the home equity payments with you So for a short time we had payments on an Audi, my NB, and a 2006 Scion tC. It took a few months to get rid of the tC. Our insurance dropped in by nearly half and then the payments $ for the Scion was freed up.

I think black cars are very classy. Unfortunately you can't keep a black car looking nice in AZ unless you wash n wax it nearly every weekend. In 4 hours it will already have a coating of dust. And if you take it to a car wash (even hand wash) you will have swirls like a mo fo on your paint job.
