Default Why Should I Move to Your Town?

I am asking you to tell me how great it is to live where you do. I have an itch to leave this whole area, although it may be a few years.

I want to know about job opportunities, crime rates, housing prices, schools, climate, commutes.

So tell me. What is so great about your town?

Hmmm..I could tell you why you shouldn't move to my town. The only thing this town has going for it is me

Here's what I like about my town.

I feel like we have the best of all worlds.

Close to a decently sized city. So we get some good shows, comedians, stuff like that. Three sports teams. Lots of nice restaurants.

We're also somewhat rural. An hour away from Amish country. The suburbs surrounding the city have lots of farms. So you can easily live in the middle of no where, but still be 20 minutes from the city. Kinda the best of both worlds.

Lots of scenery around here too. Lots of hills and curves, lots of rivers and bridges. We're definitely not a "grid" type of area. You drive all over the place. No flat lines.

As for the job market, I guess we have a little bit of everything. Our housing is very reasonable. Salaries are decent.

Commutes. Really not too bad. We complain about the traffic but I've been to areas that really have traffic problems and we have NOTHING to worry about.

Our biggest issue with traffic is that we have a LOT of bridges and several tunnels. There are 4 major tunnels heading into/out of the city. So when there's construction, it really shuts things down. The city is surrounded by three rivers and a small mountain. So without the tunnels / bridges, we're screwed.

Edited cause I forgot a few things.

We experience all four seasons. I wouldn't have it any other way. I do miss the severe winters we used to have. They aren't nearly as bad as they were when I was growing up. Either cause we're on a cycle where it's not as bad, or global warming. I dunno. But I'm sure it'll turn again someday.

Fall is absolutely beautiful around here, as is Spring. Summers aren't bad, but have been getting rather hot lately.

Also, we're close enough to the Atlantic to where it's easily doable for a drive down for a weekend. Not something you could do every weekend. But 6 hours, which ain't bad at all.

We also have a lot of lakes in the area.

Do yourself a favor and don't move to DC. Maryland...maybe. Virginia...definitely not!

Gina: KMAA! Damn you!

FWIW, WashDC area has bad traffic. The area where it borders between rain and snow. Which then gets us sleet. Messy stuff. Trafific sucks big time. That's the crappy stuff. On the good side, you have Mid Atlantic orgers! If that's not reason enough, it is a melting pot of culture and has diverse restaurants to boot. The area is fairly recession proof because most everyone works for the government or is a contractor to the government.

Thanks for the comments, but I want to know what is Good about your town. Pete's words are good, but I need more. I am interested in the Midwest, Southwest, and maybe Northern. It's just getting too expensive to live here. That, and I want to get away from my former marriage. (no offense, Bill)

Ok, let me try again.

When you live in Maryland, you get to experience all four seasons. Some consider that a plus, some do not. Spring is beautiful with lots of flowers, but there's lots of rain showers and tons of pollen. Summer is hot and humid. Fall is gorgeous, great weather with pretty leaves and stuff. Winter is hit or miss. Sometimes we get blasted with snow, sometimes it's pretty mild. But it does get pretty cold.

The state itself is somewhat small, but you got it all: mountains on the West, beaches on the East, city, rural (sort of), it's close to a ton of major cities (DC, Baltimore, Philly, etc.), great public transportation with the Metro...but traffic is pretty bad everywhere. Housing is expensive the closer you are to DC, but with the cost comes extreme convenience.

How'd I do? Better?

Maybe you should have thought of that before you BOUGHT Å HOUSE right?

We'd miss ya if you left babe.

If you are considering moving.... look at places that do NOT have hurricanes, tornados, twisters of any kind, flash-flooding, or massive earthquakes.

At least out here all we have to worry about is *what if* the mountains explode...... then the west coast would almost all fall right into the ocean But that's a big IF

*lol*

Lets see:

The job market around me, unless you wanna drive to boston/providence sorta sucks. The crime rate is sorta high, but not as bad a few years ago (depending on what part of town). The housing is definately a little inflated, the schools arent the greatest, i bet the climate is about the same as the pnw, and there's a good comunnity, but it's slightly 'ghetto', but not as bad as a real ghetto.

Soo, who wants to come to New Bedford?

little rock has (for the democrats) the clinton library, the river market/farmers market, great bars, a neat little vw club close by,bunches of rednecks, lots of parks and historic areas, and low houseing prices.schools could be better but i survived through several different districts. for a million bucks you get a huge house (i do mean huge too) by the river.lots of carrer opportunities in just about everything.and crime isnt bad at all except for southeast little rock.its the drum and crime area.VERY mild winters.it only got down to 16* at night last winter. plus a few orgers close by!!branson missouri is half a days drive through beatiful ozark mouintains. fun ride on a motorcycle too!great fishing lakes are less than two hours awayeither to the south or the north (greers ferry and lake hamilton/oachita/cathrine. plus the countries first national park, hot springs!! the same place where mobsters used to gamble. all in all a great state to live in!!

That is so 1970's.

Cleveland and the surrounding area have little to be ashamed of today. I'll let Fowvay talk the place up--I'm a country boy.

Just remember, the grass isn't always greener elsewhere. Lots of folks here in the Central Valley would love to be where you are. Given what you are looking for, I'd be pointing you towards Tucson, Az or one of many cities in Texas, which still have much more affordable housing. Fresno does have good schools.....Clovis Unified School District is in the top 5 in Calif and is consistently recognized nationally as well. David Carr (Carolina Panthers) and Carson Palmer (Cincinatti Bengals) started their football careers in 5th grade in Clovis Unified. To live in Clovis Unified, expect to pay $250,000 for a 1300 sq ft plane jane tract home in a working class neighborhood. With the high number of foreclosures we have here, expect that number to drop by next week. Fresno State Univ is also considered to be an excellent place to obtain Ag, Business, Engineering, and Nursing degrees along with others. Being centrally located, weekend travel to the SF Bay Area, Los Angeles/San Diego areas, Sacramento/Lake Tahoe, or the Central Coast is easily accomplished for day or weekend trips due to our close proximity to the mountains/coast/major metro areas. Because of the San Joaquin Valley and its geographic layout, air quality is terrible here. Folks with heavy allergy/asthma conditions find it hard to live here and many are forced to move away to make life more comfortable. Fresno may be a community of 800,000 people, but it has a smaller city atmosphere to it. Crime isn't bad, as long as you live in the north end of town, where I do, away from where the gangs and drug dealers like to duke it out. Meth is one of our largest non legal exports here, along with the groves of marijuana plants hidden in the foothills. We have an ex-actor for a mayor (Alan Autry - best known as Bubba on the In the Heat of the Night series) whois proactive about his job, but gets complaints about conducting city business at Starbucks in the north end of town instead of his office at City Hall. Major development may be around the corner, if Donald Trump acquires a failed subdivision and partially completed Jack Nickolas golf course in the SE part of town that will be re-named Trump National Golf Course Fresno should he acquire it at months end (he is the only interested party with any money to make it work and has city/county backing to attempt to pull it off). Ivanka has even made a visit to tour the property site. Word is Donald JR could be in charge. These are amongst the many facits of living or thinking about living in Fresno to consider. (personally, I like Boise, Id myself)
