Exclamation Apple Releases Unlocked iPhone Killer, Firmware Update

Apple released a new firmware update that fixes certain bugs on the iPhone and also apparently bricks(renders useless) the unlocked iPhones. Even if you insert an AT&T sim back in the unlocked iPhone it won't work. Though there have been reports that it(firmware update) has also affected regular AT&T customers.

If you have an unlocked iPhone I wouldn't update the firmware if I were you

Also, reports from Gizmodo are that if you installed some great 3rd party apps, you can kiss those goodbye also.

Saw that on Yahoo news a few days ago. Looks like all one would need to NOT do is install the firmware update.

Thats apple doing what it does best. i'm surprised it took them so long. Sony does the same thing with the psp to combat hombrew games and stuff, so why are we all surprised? I'm not.

If you dont like the product, or how the company supports it, don't buy it.

For this dull boy, the plusses outweigh the minuses.

I don't understand why people want to do stuff to their iPhone that is not Apple supported. I know, I know, it's the cool thing to do, but I spent hundreds of dollars on this product, and the first thing I don't want to do, is ruin it.

I have noticed, BTW, two shows this fall on TV that use the iPhone; JOURNEYMAN on NBC, and last night on CSI:MIAMI on CBS. However, in both cases they use what appears to be third party programs on their iPhones.

I know they are TV shows, but it would be funny if they tried to update the phones and neither worked.

I think this is a ridiculous thing to do. We'd all go nuts if our NBs turned into bricks because we had APR, Giac, Revo software and/or some other mods... Once I own something, IMO, it is mine to use however I like, so if I had an iWhatever Apple product and wanted to use it to pound nails isn't that my choice? More proof of the self-righteous superiority thing I see swirling around Apple and just another thing to remind me never to own their products.

I remember Kender saying in the Apple thread that she used Jailbreak (I think) on her iPhone for 3rd party apps... I'm wondering how her iPhone faired. Kender? Where are you?

The new iTunes store is neat but it only works in WiFi which is only at my house for me. Where I have a computer with iTunes already. I would have much rather seen iChat or MMS instead of that.

LA - 2/08 - Starbucks - WiFi

And, since you did the update, you know that Apple added a few neat tricks to the iPhone, right?

Like what? I mean, I know. But what dd you notice? I was disappointed that they used another icon for the iTunes. Why not use the one they do on the computers?

For me, the differences are few but good. I can juggle the weather cities around, the speakerphone is noticeably louder (but still too quiet), the double tapping of the Home button makes for faster calling and the double space bar at the end of the sentence when typing automatically sticks in the period.

I also appreciate the "off switch" for Edge, just in case I'm outside the US. I don't need those roaming charges!

It's not so much that it is cool, as much as it is that AT&T spies on its customers, and turns over all the internet, voice and televsion data it collects on its subscribers to the federal governemnt.

People want the iPhone, but don't want AT&T. Just that simple.

As far as the third party apps that the new update rendered useless, Apple said that the iPhone would support some third party apps, then reneged on that promise after the phone went on sale.

The audience Apple was targeting with their early advertising was like me, who has a Treo looking to upgrade to something better.

Then, reality set in, and the audience kept getting knocked down to the point where it was nothing more than an overpriced phone.

The unlock, and promise of third party apps, fueled alot of purchases. The lack of third party app support, was also the cause of a signifanct number of returns within the first week.

I already refuse to patronize AT&T for the reasons I listed above, but, had the third party support, and real 3G network support, and the ability to unlock it from AT&T would have been enough for me to switch to T-Mobile, and purchase this phone off the grey market.

But, alas, Apple and AT&T have guaranteed that I will never own one.

The reality that I spent $400 (after my rebate thingy) for a little mini computer that is also a phone has set in for me. And I love owning one. A lot. It's the most useful thing I have ever had. Who cares if they don't have useless 3rd party apps like downloading a program to tell you how to mix cocktails? You have the internet where you can look it up.

All the poo-poo'ers are going to poo-poo at anything they can to complain about something. Not following a trend is trendy.

General Melchett: Is this true, Blackadder? Did Captain Darling pooh-pooh you?

Captain Blackadder: Well, perhaps a little.

General Melchett: Well, then, damn it all! What more evidence do you need? The pooh-poohing alone is a court martial offense!

Captain Blackadder: I can assure you, sir, that the pooh-poohing was purely circumstantial.

General Melchett: Well, I hope so, Blackadder. You know, if there's one thing I've learnt from being in the Army, it's never ignore a pooh-pooh. I knew a Major, who got pooh-poohed, made the mistake of ignoring the pooh-pooh. He pooh-poohed it! Fatal error! 'Cos it turned out all along that the soldier who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other officers who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, we had to disband the regiment. Morale totally destroyed... by pooh-pooh!
