Pregnant woman, her baby killed in accident near Delta

DELTA, Ohio (AP) - A tractor-trailer attempting to pass a car on a highway in northwest Ohio caused a two-vehicle accident, killing a woman who was eight months pregnant and her baby, authorities said.

The truck driver, Michael Welch, 37, of Dunsford, Ont., was charged with vehicular homicide, according to the State Highway Patrol. He was not injured.

Authorities said Welch was traveling in the westbound lane of U.S. Route 20A near Delta, about 30 miles west of Toledo, Wednesday night when he tried to a pass a car driven by Nathan Koder, 26, of Delta.

Welch's truck returned to the driving lane because of oncoming traffic but his truck hit Koder's car, causing the car to spin into the eastbound lane, where it was struck by an oncoming car, authorities said.

Koder's wife, Nicole Koder, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. Helicopter surgeons performed an emergency Caesarean section on the woman and took the baby to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, where the child died about an hour later, said Trooper Chris Demuth.

Nathan Koder was in stable condition at the same hospital. The Koders' 1-year-old daughter, Alexis, was treated then released from the Fulton County Health Center. The driver of the other car was listed in serious condition at Medical University of Ohio.

Im still in shock .. . I missed the news this morning but there was a few people talking about the wreck this morning at work . for me I Felt sad that someone lost their daughter and grandchild , later on only to find out it was My friends ( who i had worked with ) Daughter and I wanted to . IT seems like it was just yesterday i was talking to Nicole @ her moms wedding .

I heard this yesterday on the radio on my way home from work.
My heart goes out to Nicole's family.
Sometimes these truckers amaze me with their disregard for safety. Before any truckers start to bash me I do drive truck for a living. The loads we carry are not as important as the lives that can be lost if we cause an accident.

thanks gang , I heard from Karen , Nicoles mom , shes still in shock about the whole thing , Honestly I dont think it has hit her yet that her daughter and grandson are gone . the funeral was pending as they hadnt released the bodies yet. But supposedly on the news at 6 they announced when the services are . It sucks. I so wish it was happier reasons for seeing them sigh ..

well I went to the funeral home tonite, pulling into the parking lot , I really didnt want to get out of the car . Sigh * I walk in trying to find my friend ( Nicoles mom ) , I see the casket and had to look away . I dont do well at funerals but then again who does .. Anyways I find karen hug her and tell her everything will be ok ,as at this point im a loss for words . Finally get up the strenght to walk up to the casket trying to hold back tears . it was so beautiful , white lace pink flowers, they had her baby wraped in a blue blanket with a lil blue bonnet and her holding him looked so peaceful I got one of the cards that has the info in it ( dont know what they are really called ) . Thought I would share it with you all .
