Default Champagne help (recommendations)

OK, I have been charged with getitng my dad a bottle of champagne for his birthday, and I have absolutley no clue as to what would be considered a good champange. I'm not looking to go the cheapest route, but I do not have unlimited funds, either. Something that would run about $30-45 would be OK.

My parents drink wine regularly, so I would think taste would be the prioroty

Thanks!

Moet would be somewhere in that range, has a nice crisp taste without any sugary aftertaste lingering around...

Hi!

Champagne, huh? Good choice!

Several options:

Deutz NV Brut Classic--Dry, with a fresh acidic taste. Usually runs in the $50 range, and was rated a 93 by Wine Enthusiast.

Gosset NV Brut Excellence--Not as acidic as the Deutz, but very nice and smooth. Rated a 92 by Wine Spectator, and runs around $40.

Laurent Perrier NV Brut--Crisp and light. Very nice taste, and not as expensive--runs around $40, and was rated a 91 by Wine Enthusiast.

I would check with your local wine shop for more options. Things like this are better from places like that. Grocery stores will not have the selection, and most do not rate the wines for you.

Good luck!

Grocery Store?!?! Ain't no grocery store around here that sells liquor

In PA. it's strictly the State Store. Granted, I had to go through a grocery store to get there... On the plus side, I got me a very nice ham & cheese sandwich from the grocery store deli for lunch

I ended up with a Moet & Chandon. The gentleman in the store said it was a popular choice. Cost me $40. I'll chime in later with a verdict.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I am a full on Champagne and Wine snob and I definetly have my favorites.

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin also known as "Yellow Lable" happens to be my all time favorite being the equal of Champagnes costing up to and even more than $1000 a magnum. This is truly a superb Champagne in every way and is surprisingly affordable at about $45 for a full bottle.

It has won may Gold medals, always wins taste offs and is a main stay in most upscale restaraunts around the world. You should have no problem finding this at your local retailor as it is gaining popularity in the United States.

Tom aka Fowvay

Ps.. This is a real Champagne made in the Champagne region in France.. not a California Sparkling wine.

Can you guys actually call the non-french stuff Champagne? We have to call it méthode champenoise and for the record Moet (pronounced with a hard "T") is over rated. Nice but you can get better for a third the price.
