Default Herbie and the New Beetle

OK, I must admit I only saw Herbie Fully Loaded last night on Demand and it got me thinking, does anyone think the New Beetle will ever become as beloved as the original? I tend to think not, simply because the automotive landscape has changed so much since Herbie's time.

I doubt it, and to be honest, I hope not

There can only be one like Herbie, and we have to admit, out Beetle is great, but just does not have the charisma of Herbie hey

Default Well,

Maybe, but in a different way then the old ones. There are a lot of people that do mods to the new ones.

The history is obviously with the old ones. And being a owner of both.....there are heart felt memories with both.

So I guess the answer could be Yes, but No!

I'm working on it! I'm still writing the script for "Charlie and the Misadventures on Maple Street," a cute film in which a new beetle becomes intoxicated with a vile substance and has to be exorcized with a VAGCOM. oh wait, that's just my day to day routine to keep it running [j/k]

That's called a journal , not a script.

My opinion judging by what i see is that every make/model of car has it's own subculture. I mean people still like Yugos http://yugocars.fw.hu/ (Is it just me, or do Yugos look awfully familiar to a VW person?)

The old skool Beetles and assorted VWs will always have that devoted fanbase of purists, so will we. It's my favorite car and always will be and if i'm this psychotic about it, i'm sure there will be others 20 years from now or 40 years from now.

If you build it...they will come.

MAKE the New Beetle memorable. It's up to us.

What if OJ owned a white New Beetle and was racing down that highway away from Police?? What if Thelma and Louise took their final plunge in a NBC??

One sad point is... I doubt a New Beetle will ever be able to last as long as the original Beetles did. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. The original Beetle could have rust holes in the floorboards and half the wires disconnected from the distributor and you could still expect to get another 50,000 miles on it before anything really needed tending to. And even then, if you blew a motor, it was $100-150 to get a new one and you could put it in yourself.

The New Beetle is decent quality as far as modern cars go... but it'll never live to 500,000 or 750,000 miles that the old ones did. As much as we love 'em, it really is a "disposable" car (which fits today's disposable culture and economy). Not meant to have a life past 100,000 or 120,000 miles.

For this reason, I don't think the New Beetle will ever approach the status of the original.
