Default Crayon smell?

Hi all. While I was home for the holiday, my nephew went somewhere with me, as soon as he jumped in Opie, he said "I love the smell in your car, it smells like crayons". I have read a little bit about it in here, but can someone explain it to me? Why do our bugs have that smell? Thanks in advance...

It's because VW use recycled crayons for the interior, or something.

There are multiple threads on this...

BB has a Crayon smell and I love it, but others are bothered by it

Anyways, do a quick search, you'll see quiet a few threads discussing the reasons why we think they have that "special" smell.

Actually, you're not far off the mark. VW uses paraffin wax in the chassis and interior of the MKIV vehicles. I was not aware until now that they also used it in the Beetle platform, but it makes sense.

It serves as a sound deadener as well as rust protection IIRC.

Just count yourselves fortunate it doesn't leak out and run down your rocker panels in the summer time like my GTI does

The crayon smell is caused by the sound deadening/heat shield used below the carpet. I recently took apart the inside of my car hunting it down. Check out my post at the bottom of this link for more details.

Funny smell

It's the sound deadner they use that is sprayed on the birdcage before the interior is put in car. I know, as we do the delivery systems where I work

When I switched out my cloth seats last year for leather, my smell went a away - just a little.

But maybe Im just used to it... because other people always point it out to me... but then again, I have a GIANT blue crayon pillow in my beetle

where did you get a crayon pillow breez? my sister is looking for a giant crayon.
If you don't give your bug a bunch of stuffed animl friends to hang with he gets out the crayons and he hides them and sometimes they are too close to the engine they melt and you get crayon smell. I fear Ringo will be stinking of crayons he is going to sit until at least monday, I'm not allowed to drive and it sucks!

Yeah, if I leave BB parked - and go away for a weekend and come back, BB smells of fresh crayon! I love that smell.
