Years ago when I lived in BG, KY and the local channel did not have the Doppler Radar capabilities that most large cities had, so bad weather alerts were not as obtrusive; then they upgraded to the Doppler system and the weather forecaster was like a kid who just got their first X-Box.
I think it is the technology that is fueling the over-dramatic reporting.
In my area, what I thought was comical (not to minimize the danger) for a Nashville local station; they had three people doing the weather reporting and all three of them had there own 50+ inch flat panel monitor doing their/its own thing and each would "pass the torch" as it were, to report on something "different".
Is/Was there really that much information to convey?
Perhaps GPS should be an enhancement to HD TV's and linked with the Doppler weather system and then only the people in the affected areas could/would receive weather warnings, while those who are not, would not.
