Need a little help from my friends . . .

Hi. I’m normally not the type to air my laundry in public, but I really need your help.

As some of you may know, my grandson Sammy was born with a heart defect. At 4 days, he had his first open-heart surgery (the Norwood procedure), and at 4 ½ months his second (the Glenn). The third (the Fontan) procedure is the most major and will be done in the May-June time frame. In preparation for this, today he has to go through a battery of tests/x-rays/blood work and tomorrow he will have a Cardiac Catherization done. www.babysamson.com.


I’m feeling very fragile at this point because it’s the first time that I haven’t been up there (my son said he’d rather have me come up in a couple of weeks for Sammy’s 2nd birthday). I feel helpless. Scared. Out of control. Although the staff at Children’s Hospital Boston is wonderful, and fantastic, and do this all the time, there’s still a chance that Sammy could have a stroke tomorrow. It’s bad enough that he’s being poked and prodded today. When I think of someone having a stroke I think of someone old (or at least that’s been my experience) – you don’t think of a kid that isn’t even 2 yet!

Sammy is absolutely the coolest kid ever.

I’ve never been a religious person – sometimes I wish I were. Although I believe in guardian angels, I don’t know how I feel about God. Lately I find myself asking why. Why Sammy? Why his parents? I know there’s a reason for everything but my hope is that somehow Sammy won’t be held accountable for any of my past screw-ups.

My request is this: please keep Sammy and his parents in your thoughts – we could use as much positive energy as possible.

I do pray that everything goes well for him, and his parents, and grandparents, will have him back safe in their arms soon! i am so sorry to hear about your grandson deb. i will keep him my thoughts and hope that he's with the ones he loves at all times. i don't think there's an answer to the "why him". life can be cruel and random and unfortunately, sometimes these things happen. they may happen for a reason though - to make you appreciate every day and never take for granted the times you spend with those you love.

i hope your grandson pulls though. no one that young should have to suffer anything more than a scraped knee. i so sorry you're having to go through this. keep your spirits up, if not for you, for your grandson.

I'll pray for that cute little guy and for you Deb, and his parents too. AND DON'T YOU EVER BLAME THIS ON ANYTHING YOU MIGHT HAVE OR HAVE NOT DONE!!God is not vengeful. He only gives us what we can handle. Some more than others. When you go see him for his birthday you give him a big hug from me. And you go right ahead and get him that pony, or whatever it is he wants

Thanks for sharing, Deb. I hope all works out 110% and Sammy gets to just be a kid.
