Default Reporting Posts/Threads

With a rash of new spam that we have been getting it is important that people report the threads as they see them.

The moderator staff does try to provide good coverage so that we have eyes looking for them, but it does help if you report the bad threads...

How do i report a thread you ask?

Well, let me tell you...

On every post on the nb.org there is one of these icons:

To report a thread, just click on that icon, and fill out the form that pops up.

In order to make the moderator lives easier, please be descriptive when you fill out what is wrong with the thread.

And for goodness sake, if there is porn, or not safe for work material please state that in your report. As us moderators might be dealing with it from work and would rather not have our day career compromised by our nightjob

Reporting a thread means that every person who has moderator rights in that forum recieves an email saying that there is a thread needing attention.

PMing a moderator about the spam thread means that only 1 person is alerted to it who may or may not be available to deal with it.

Please... please... click on the report thread.

Anyone who reports this thread gets a temporary banning

Let me echo James request. It helps a great deal to know something more than "Spammer!". If the thread contains actual porn pictures, please say so! At some of our day jobs, opening a web page that ends up having porn on it could cost us our jobs.

Thanks everyone for the reported posts and helping us all out.

This cannot be emphasised enough, especially when it comes to the porn cr@p, as I am sure there are underaged persons who visit here from time to time and absolutely do not need to be exposed to that kind of stuff.

I know I myself have reported spam threads when I see them. It only takes a minute or two of one's time.

To get the little yellow triangle you have to open the thread. I for one won't do that for fear of getting a worm or trojan. I hope you don't mind just getting an e-mail with a heads up.

i heartily second Ellen's comments...since you have to OPEN THE THREAD to get to the post, I've on at least two occasions opened porn threads with "action photos" from porn spammers...

i'm coming at it from a slightly different direction....my bosses know i'm an admin for a local VW club website (and believe me, we're fighting the spammers too).

they also know i visit newbeetle.org during the day. normally, i'll do it at lunch, but i will stop in from time to time between meetings.

still, it's a little embarrassing to have to go into the boss to 'splain the images that just popped up on my desktop...it'd be nice to have a button to report a "suspected" post...especially from new users with unusual names.

so, on occasion, i've emailed a mod or admin alerting them to a possible spam or porn spam thread vs. clicking on the spam link. thanks to them for understanding.

oh, and i guess we can count our blessings that it's 'only' porn spam. there are other forms of porn that could get all of us hauled off in handcuffs.

Unless the nb.org has been compromised,I am 99% certain that you would not get a worm/trojan unless you clicked a link/picture that the person has posted in the thread.

Opening it to click the triangle, will not infect you.

This may seem like a silly idea, but is there a way to instigate a probationary period for new members?

What I mean is that new members cannot post a new thread within X number of days after joining or X number of thread replies?

Another thing that this would help with is people joining, asking one or two questions that are easy to find answers to with the search function, and then leaving.

I find this thread offensive. Even the mention of porn is so rude. How do I report it again?

I know that there is a BMW thread that wont allow you to post pictures until you've made 25 posts... 25 seems extreme, but when I started visiting their forum it was cute to see members so excited about sharring their pictures on their 25th post.

Anyways, I think the Mods are doing a great job with .org and Ill try to do whatever I can to help

Maybe some stringent guidelines are needed for new members?

What about running new threads by a brand new user through a mod before having them show up. Or how about not letting new users make a new thread immediately after creating the account, maybe make it so they have to at least look at 10 or 20 threads before creating a new thread.

speaking of..... yay for lesbian porn toys. we understand beetles look like toy cars, but not necessarily that kind!

on another note, it might be a good idea for whoever reports a thread to just make a reply saying "reported" so the mods don't get 20 emails about the same thread.

Thanks for reporting the bad threads. I just cleaned up the boards and banned the 4 offenders.

Cheers!
