Default A Beetle Story

A true story that happened at the now-defunct Myrtle Square Mall in Myrtle Beach, SC a number of years ago...eight perhaps?

After a short, uneventful shopping excursion at the mall, I stepped outside to go to my car. Just before stepping down from a curb and onto the parking lot, a shiny new Volkswagen Beetle convertible blasted its horn at me, with the intent of startling me, which it did...I nearly jumped out of my skin. To add insult to injury, the group of teenagers riding in the Beetle all taunted and yelled as they rode past, some sitting and some even standing. A good time was had by all...except me.

Seemingly unrelated to the above incident, this seemed like an opportune time to go back into the mall and visit the Baskin-Robbins somehow...a double cone of chocolate almond seemed to hit the spot. I guess I'd meant to do that and just forgotten.

Returning to my car, an interesting situation developed...as I turned to get into my car, I couldn't help but notice that the now-driverless and unattended, aforementioned VW Beetle was parked right beside me in the parking lot. The top just happened to still be down. On closer inspection I noticed that it had very nice, new white cloth seats. My vision moved very slowly from my right hand (the one holding the double cone of chocolate almond) to the new white seats, and then back to the cone. Obviously the seats would never be the same again if a cone of Baskin-Robbins chocolate almond were to accidentally fall on them and consequently melt in the 90+ degree heat.

After weighing the rude treatment from the kids versus the the obvious pleasures of consuming the ice cream, I decided to enjoy the latter...obviously the right thing to do. It was a very good cone of ice cream.
==========
I decided to use this illustration with some middle school band students of mine a couple of days later, as a teaching tool, sort of a morality story of right vs. wrong, turning the other cheek, if you will.

One girl in the class, after giving the situation much thought, raise her hand and told me, "Mr. Carter, what you could have done, you could have rubbed the ice cream in their seats, and then gone back in and got you another one."

I never was a very good teacher...

Kenny Carter

I couldn't ruin a bug even if the owners were jackasses
I might however do something temporary, like reach down and pop the hood... and I know exactly what hose to unhook and repoposition to make washer fluid shoot in someones face.... just a little dab of the ice cream on the windshield... no harm to the car

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I feel...Of course, a double cone of Baskin-Robbins chocolate almond makes doing the right thing even easier!

They parked next to you for a reason...because they must love their car too.
Glad you didn't ruin their car...I bet if they had seen you in their car they would have honked as well...but with a wave instead.

Funny

This would have been my approach...

Go back in to Baskin Robbins and get a single scoop of ice cream and put it in a dish; (so when it melts it is in the dish) place the dish on the front seat, with a note that says... "A little respect goes a long way."
