Default Ubuntu advise? (Wifi problems...)

I know there are a few people here on the org that swear by Linux, so I decided to try it out today. I love it!!!

Problem is, I can't get on my wifi connection at my house. It's an unsecured network (I know, horrible thing to do, but I'm lazy and have no passwords to hide), and Ubuntu see it when I go to System>Administration>Network, but Firefox refuses to load any sites.

Any ideas? I'm doing this on my lappy, which is a Compaq Presario V4435NR.

I decided that it would just be easier and safer to go with a WPA encryption. Not a big deal... just made the password a whole bunch of ones so i could actually remember it!

That's what I found with a bunch of googling. It's not an HP/Compaq thing, I think it's a Ubuntu thing.

And in actuality, it makes sense. Not allowing an unsecured network is a very smart thing to do. It makes the computer that much safer.

I'm looking forward to trying out Ubuntu and seeing what I can do with it!

I think they did have secured networks though
it had something to do with drivers

Yeah, I couldn't for the life of me, get my wireless to work when i was using gutsy. but it works now in hardy.

I was gonna suggest using knetworkmanager, but that comes with kubuntu, not ubuntu. :-P
