A Car I Hated and a Car I Loved

Before I had my very own car, I drove the spare family car. For four years, that was a Chevette. What a hunka junk! Potato-shaped and potato-colored. I hated it and it hated me. Left me stranded on the roadside more than once. Toward trade-in time we kept having to give it transfusions.

(A relative of a friend in Germany, a young man studying automotive engineering, said the Chevette was originally some kind of Opel and that we Americans ruined it.)

The next car was my first very own car, a 1986 Camry, bought new that year. OK, go ahead and laugh. "Boringly reliable" suited me very well at that stage of my life and after driving that **** Chevette for four years. And the Camry of 1986 was still an angular-looking roomy compact. It served me well for 12 years, when it started to develop old-lady symptoms of incontinence and my mechanic told me it was time to say good-bye.

The only complaints I had about it were that (1) it was not dark red and (2) at that trim level, it had one less seat adjustment than I would have liked. (When you're +/- 5' 0", achieving a good driving position can be a challenge.)

With the next car I finally got my dark red, but that's a story for a different forum, because it was a 1994 Jetta GLS, bought used in 1998 and, on the same mechanic's say-so, traded in for a NB a week ago. And yes, it had a bit more temperament than the Camry.

the one car I hated was a '73 Omega..OMG what a pig!!
the one car I loved (before the NB) was my '73 Westy;one time I made out in the church parking lot with the curtains closed...tee hee...but it was brought to a premature end when someone pulled out from a red light too soon,and BAM! It was dead
