Ditto- a good guy all around- and he was a VW fan as well (red ca. '61 beetle cabrio, etc.) He was in a VW ad at one point.

Love his charity food brand too- Newman Os, dressings, sauces, etc.

He will be missed. He did have a full & great life. Happily married to the same woman since 1958, something very rare in hollywood.

Wow, I didn't know that. RIP Paul.

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

His most famous line may have been in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, when Robert Redford's Sundance Kid tells Newman's Cassidy he won't jump hundreds of feet into a river to escape gunfighters — because he can't swim.

"What're you, crazy?" Cassidy says. "The fall'll prob'ly kill ya."

They jump anyway. So did Newman, into role after role. Many of his characters were rebels, but they were also regular guys, average Joes who took on impossible tasks with cynical jokes but no real complaints. He made the roles look easy, but they weren't.

I knew this was coming, but I still wasn't prepared. Ya know how some celebrity deaths really hit ya? Well this was one of them for me. I've been depressed all morning. It's as bad for me as when Frank Sinatra died. I feel really bad for Joanne Woodward too.....a 50 year marriage is so rare these days and a 50 year 'Hollywood' marriage is practically extinct!

Okay, going to watch 'A New Kind of Love' now. My favorite Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward movie............ R.I.P. Paul Newman.

Of many memories, I think my favorite is of him playing "Plastic Jesus" on the banjo in Cool-Hand Luke.

I was at the movies today (EAGLE EYE) and I said to the young lady behind the popcorn counter, 'So what do you think of Paul Newman dying?' and she said, 'Who is he?' and I said, 'You don't know Paul Newman?' and another customer said, 'Isn't he the one behid the salad dressing?'

Now that was sad.

One of my very favorite Newman flicks is Road to Perdition, I can watch it over and over. He was interviewed by Playboy many years ago and asked why he had never "strayed" from his marrige and I loved his answer: "When you have steak at home, why go out for hamburger". Truly great American.

In Paul Newman's honor, I played "Plastic Jesus" on the banjo last night. Coulda done it better on the guitar, but the banjo seemed right. Ave atque vale Paul!

While I too am a fan of Paul Newman the actor, my memories of him revolve around his racing career.

I certainly did not know him, even casually, but being in his presence at the track many times left me with a tremendous amount of admiration - both as a driver and as a person.
He had time for anyone & everyone who approached him at the track - with two provisos: you did not mention acting nor did you ask for an autograph
For someone who didn't take up racing until he was in his mid-40's he was truly an excellent driver. The consensus was had he taken up racing as a young man he would have been in the top tier of professional drivers.

At the 1987 St Petersburg Gran Prix I saw a side of Newman that reinforced his humaness. A bad accident had just occurred and all the cars were brought to pit lane while the scene was cleared. There had been a fatality. Jim Fitzgerald, his friend/mentor, had impacted the concrete wall. To this day I can still see Paul Newman sitting in his race car with tears streaming down his cheeks. His car was withdrawn due to "mechanical problems."

As a philanthropist his "Newmans Own" and his support of the "Hole in the Wall Gang" for children are both legendary.

And in answer to the usual question: Yes, his eyes are definitely blue.
