The old air cooled Beetles would get around in the snow really well. I think the narrow tires helped a lot.

I haven't tried it in a NB.

We got our snow today, with ice. Still having an ice storm right now.

This is the first time I have driven a manual car in 10 years in a snowstorm. I was happy to make it up my steep hill, but I didn't try the driveway. A mustang got stuck midway up and the guy was watching me drive past him with a disbelieving expression on his face.

Any advice on what to do with a manual car with no ABS once it goes into a skid?

Ya, I drove to work and by the time I we left, it had snowed several inches. I work swing, and had no way to get home but my car from the parking garage.

Made it half a block.......

This was the next day. My car is now stuck in the snow, and encased in freezing rain. Poor Jewel!

Actually I prefer a manual to an auto. If you downshift to slow the car that way you'll hardly have to use your brakes. Practice in a snow filled parking lot. If you are in a skid with no ABS pump your brakes. Don't slam them on. On off on off. Practice that in the lot too. Just make sure no other cars are around.First and formost is to NOT panic. To practice the downshift stop it doesn't have to be snowy. It works all the time for any weather conditions.

That looked like fun! Were you in second or first gear? Starting in second would help alot with wheel spin.Soo glad you made it home safely.

Yes, driving off in 2nd gear when the road is icy is rule #1.
Downshifting is easy. Listen to your engine and play with the clutch. I downshift all the time. Even in summertime!

I much prefer driving a manual, even more so on ice. The driver has more control over the car. When it's really icy out, I just move between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and avoid the brakes as much as possible. When I left for work at 7:30, the temp was -14. No more snow but it's still icy in some spots.
