Exactly 1 week after installing the Stebel horn, this happens:

We don't need this right now.

Good thing is your OK and truthfully the damage doesnt appear from these photo's to be deemed unrepairable. Looks like alot of superficial damage looking at where the bumper is attatched to the frame rail appears to be straight. Should'nt take scrappping the car. So was this your fault or the other parties? Either way insurance should take care of it.

And just wondering why is the right headlight hanging out when the damage is on the left?

Don't scrap it, the rest of the car looks to be in great condition.

This is the 3rd wreck this car's been in. We'll see what the insurance wants to do. Can't do anything till monday. Borrowing a friend's car till then.

Wife was driving. She's ok.

The insurance is going to fix the car (minus the 1000 dollar deductable). 4500 in damage to it.

Also, the wife is strongly considering selling this car once it's fixed. So the thread title still stands.

This car was her dream car, but now, she's starting to realize the need for practicality over novalty. The NewBeetle is a novalty car (sorry everyone) but it is. She's wanting something that will be able to carry more things and people comfortably and still be fun to drive. One car she's thinking of is a 1st gen Ford Focus ZX5 SVT. 5 doors, space in the back that's actually useable for things, and a 170bhp 4 mounted to a 6-speed Getrag manual. 20 more horses than the bug, slightly lower insurance rate because it's not turbocharged, and can be had cheap.

Since I'm sure everyone is mad at me/us now, she's also considering a late 90's early 00's Jetta or 4-door Golf both 1.8T.

Ford Salespeople called those "throw away" cars. The big hope was the car outlasted the payments. True story.

I know. I remember that too. But now many of those cars have 150K+ and are still going. Especially the stickshift models (SVT and regular).

Ok, what would YOU recommend as a small to mid sized car with 4 doors that's actually fun to drive (I.e. Pretty quick)?

A 1.9tdi or 1.8T Bug

Sad fact of the matter is, if you buy another car, you'll be back to selling that within a year and getting another Bug

Yeah - the damage doesn't look that bad, mine was worse...but I guess it was newer when it was wrecked. Too bad about her falling out of love with the Beetle, but I can understand if her heart isn't in it anymore.

Glad it isn't getting scrapped.

Small to mid sized? A Golf TDI.

More room? Jetta Wagon.

But neither can be had for under $10k. So they're not cheap, but the manual will get closer or over 50mpg (pre-2004 models for sure).

But I'm biased to diesel.

Our current bug is already a 1.8T. The problem that my wife is realizing is that the bug is fun to drive and cute...and that's it. It is not meant for hauling anything that you couldn't carry in a Smart car. It just has not storage room. But, then again, the bug was likely never meant to be a practical car anyway. That's what the Golf, the car the Bug is based on, is for. The Bug is a novalty car. That's not a hit against it, it just is what it is. Understand, I'm not bad mouthing the bug, simply stating what is.

If we could afford a 3rd vehicle so that my wife could keep the bug, we'd do it, but we can't, so she's opting for practicality and convenience over novalty now. I'm just trying to find something >$7000 that is fuel efficient, practical AND fast/fun.

It didn't look too bad to me either, but it's $4,500 worth of damage. I'm glad the ins didn't scrap it too. This way, we can at least sell it or trade it and not get completely raped buy how much ins would pay us if totalled.

Thanks.

As one who has moved a King mattress and currently has a 79" tall (long, laid down) book case in his bug RIGHT NOW... I find this a bit misleading/dead wrong.

you're just not using your space correctly. now, people, no contest. The back seat is there for insurance purposes.

Saying you can't carry something large in it, uh, not the case. See my photos in the what have you hauled thread. Amzing what you can do without a back seat, and carrier bars or a roof top basket.

Funny you think not practical to drive. I am 350lbs my wife bless her is about 250, my 16yr old daughter 5'11" and 260ish and my boy 9yrs right at 5' and 145lbs. We regularly use the beetle TDI for trips from Dallas to Houston and still get enough luggage in the boot for the weekend and 40MPG at 70MPH. Now I will admit the car is loaded (over) but it handles nice has plenty opf pep and my kids are more comfortable in the back than in my F150 extended cab. To each his own I guess. FOCUS on the future and forget the past, its behind you anyway.
