Default The world is full of jerks.

Tonight some "friends" (who I'm quickly realizing aren't friends) made fun of me for my "Beetle addiction" as they named it. It wasn't an endearing term either. They laughed at me for going to Roswell, and for going to gtg's, etc. It made me feel really small, silly, and for some reason, worthless. But more importantly, it made me really appreciate the org and all you wonderful "addicts" who get it and know it's about so much more than a car, it's about the wonderful people of the org. I love you orgers! Thanks for being you, and thanks for accepting just about everyone, including me.

I wouldn't let these people get to you. To make you feel better, my wife picks on me about my NB. And the worst thing about it is, she picked the car out for me. So don't let these people get on your last nerve and enjoy what you like.

I get the same thing all of the time for being male and liking the NB and the old Beetle . It used to bother me really bad, but I`ve come to the conclusion that I can`t please everyone and the cars that we like are the most popular in the world for a reason.

People tend to respect my automotive choices regardless of what I drive then again I'm also a 6'5" shaved headed goatee'd mother fire trucker... might have a little to do with it?

Don't let someone else make you feel like you don't want to feel!

I get a lot of razzing for such a big guy driving a "little" yellow bug.Luckily I work with a lot of women,so it's truly good natured fun.So one day one of the Nurses who razzes me the most asked for a ride home.I was more than happy to. The look on her face was just amazing. She LOVED "Bessie".I actually had to prove that it was a 2003,"This can't be a 8 year old car?!" yep.
Let 'em look, let 'em laugh and point,I love this car,and without a car payment, well,it's even better.

Your friends don't realize that everyone is a geek about something. Maybe it's a sci fi show, a car, handbags, a favorite author, everyone geeks out over something. So your friends don't share your enthusiasm for Beetles. That's not cool, and not very respectful of your feelings.

I would rather be addicted to New Beetles and VWs, than alcohol, tobacco or crack......

Your so-called friends are just jealous. Keep that in mind.

Never feel bad over a hobby that you truly enjoy. It's a waste of your time to fret over what other people think. Just means they dont have their own hobbies to really get in to. I am a sci fi geek & medieval/renaissance enthuthiast all of which I make clothes for & goto events in.

It is a lack of open mindedness that sets others to technically bullying others. I agree with Dnyed.

Thanks peeps! You guys are so encouraging.

I guess what made me feel so bad was that they asked me when Ryan (My boyfriend) was going to get a Beetle. I very excitedly and very stupidly told them about how he's not, but we've been looking at finding a project Beetle to work on together. They had a good jolly laugh at that. Then they asked me what he drives. I said he loves his Dodge SRT-4 and would never get rid of it. Then one of the girls interjected, "It's a Neon". And someone else started going on about how we needed to find a real hobby instead of being white trash folk with car parts in our driveway. That really upset me, and I realized then that this group of people whom I used to be so involved with were clearly not something I needed to be a part of any longer.

They sad thing is that there was a time in my life when these were my friends. These people were people I spent all my time with. I've transitioned a lot in the past year (I left the church). Over time I thought I could remain friends with these people, as they were such an important part of my life, but now I know. They see me as their subordinate for many reasons; education, marital status, religious views, occupation, even zip code.

The positive in all of this is that I know who my real friends are. Thanks so much for being encouraging. I love the org, and more importantly, I love the people of the org!

As I too have been razzed by friends of mine, however it was done with an air of respect, and not to belittle. These "friends", whom you've mentioned are far from that. For someone who makes their personal importance and self-work valid, on the degrading of another is no friend, and you should distance yourself from them. We all tease amongst friends, but from what you're telling us, this is way beyond that.

There's so many good comments here and I echo pretty much all of them. As OhSnap said, we all geek after something and have a passion for one thing or another. Be happy for who you are and what makes you happy and rubbish to those who can't accept that. I'm sure you'll find another church in time, that you're more comfortable with- don't let the few ruin the faith that lies within you.

As far as your beetle addiction, I can't help you there. I've got it pretty bad myself....My wife calls Cup, "the other woman", and my best bud, call us orgers "the secret society", for all the waving we do and GtG's, and we often call the org the island of misfit toys. So I'm in the same boat as you kiddo, but it's a good boat to be in:

If our addiction is just these little cars of ours, well maybe everyone else needs to get one- life would be so much better

Maybe your former friends need to get a beetle. Seems like our lives are happier, compared to their bitter, demeaning, condescending existence.

Brush them off, live on and enjoy life kiddo- we're in you corner

Everyone on this thread is right! My addiction has been fierce! I am driving my third New Beetle, I have drivenn hundreds of miles to get to meet some peeps with the same passion as I have for my car. If those "friends" of yours have to laugh and make fun of you because you are passionate about your car, they must be dealing with somme pretty deep insecurities themselves. I've met some people since I joined the Org in August of 2003, that will be my friends for the rest of my life. From Tom & Aaron that first week I became a New Beetle owner, to Jonk, my best buddy, to VW Gary and his lovely wife and all those guys in South Carolina more recently. Hey you will always find like minded (nutty) people here who call their cars by a name, order Birth Certificates....on and on and on.......

((Stands up))My name is Fallon, and I have a problem.

LOL. Like I said, I'm realizing now that these people have no place in my life any longer. It feels nice to not care anymore. Today i went and test drove three other new Beetles. One was a Silver 05 2.0. One was a red 99 2.0. The last one is a White 99 2.0. The white one is in the worst shape. It needs lots of love, but oddly, the paint is all pretty good still. The interior needs a lot of love. For some reason I swear this car is calling me. I drive past it everyday. It's been for sale for 6 months. I think it's my second bug, but I haven't convinced myself to let go of the cash monies yet.

I think the above behavior is what got me laughed at. LOL. Oh well.
