A few weeks back I sent a $500 deposit to VW in hope of earning the right to purchase on of the special edition 2012 VW Launch Edition Beetles. They are only making 600 of them. Yesterday I received in the mail a really cool box from VW with a congratulations letter and a Key to the new Beetle. So, it sounds like I was chosen as one of the 600. I'm looking for an opinion. Will this really be collectable? What would this car be worth?

The only VWs that really seemed to hold their value incredibly well, are the R32s, mainly because they were in high demand, and you quite simply couldn't get everything available on the R32 on a regular old Golf or GTI. With the Beetle special editions, they're pretty much like any other Beetles, but with special colors. These launch editions aren't really anything different than what you could option out in another Beetle. So if you wanted one because you thought it'd become a collector, or so that you could sell it later at a profit, or at a much higher value than any other Beetle, then I'd say probably not a good idea. If you got it cause you love them, and like the color / options, and are psyched at being one of the first, then by all means. While these special editions may not mean much to the general public, I can tell you those out there who have them, love them to death!

Ultimately this car may have a slightly higher value, dependent on many variables. The most important of which will be mileage. VIN will also have a small part in it, unless of course you have the one with the last six digits 000001, in which case it will be best to buy the car and mothball it. The success (as it plays out) of the brand will also affect the value of the SE. I do own a (purported) 500 unit SE, now seven years old, that I purchased used last year with 40k miles, and I did pay a slight premium because of the SE, just look up the SEs in any of the better used car value guides. The more valuable SEs are the ones where only one, or just a handful were produced. As with anything the final test will be a result of the supply and demand economic theory. Consider today's values on the TDi, Turbo S, Sport, Chameleon paint, etc. Here's a little history of the SEs over the years. About the VW Beetle Special Editions | Contents MORAV

Of course not. It would only make sense, since I'm sure many people will change their mind. However, I don't believe they would just keep taking deposit after deposit, even once all deals were final, and all cars were spoken for.

No, I agree. I'm sure the cut-off was done at the point at which 600 sales were consumated with the Saels Departments. But this said, it would only make sense that now, if the deal hasn't been done, it will be on some type of contigency v. possible cancelled orders (not deposits), prior to shipment. Once shipped, the "dead" deals will go to Dealer inventory of that specific Dealer.

As of now my local dealer has not received any info to do any deals. Here is the welcome gift sent, even if you do not buy, the gift is yours to keep. The price stated was $24,950.00 minus the $495.00 sent in for the preorder.

So you will get the car for 24,950 - your deposit? Or will the dealer tack on a premium of say $2000 for "Market Value"?
I maybe would have done this if it wasn't black and an automatic. If you could choose the color that would have been cool. Why cloth seats? Will they be numbered XXX/600?

VW`s stated price was $24,950, the deposit sent in was $495, so price should be $24,455??? I was told by the sales people at my local VW dealer the owner does not mark up the vehicles, so we shall see when I sit down and make a deal.
The info says Sport Cloth seats with interior contrast seat stitching(whatever that means??). I hope I get to see vehicle before the deal is set. |

If it were me, I'd head to the dealer quickly, if I were really interested. And, they may very well have some pictures or more information as to the seats, and what you can expect. |

My local dealer has no info on what is to happen next in the preorder. I talked with the preorder people, they said they are sending the info to the dealers. My dealer is going to contact me when they have the info to continue the preorder process.

Pretty easy from here – Netfin will scan and send the doc to preorderdealersupport@vw.com, we record that and when the cars are in port we’ll assign a VIN to your reservation and route the car for delivery in the launch wave of vehicles. That part of the process is expected to start mid-September, and you’ll get another email communication as well as some messages from your dealer

Interesting, my 02' turbo s was 23.5k new; so the pricing hasn't gone up that much... on the other hand; that was the most expensive new beetle at the time. The "R" Beetle; I would have to assume will be quite a bit more... we will see...

So I went to the VW dealer by my house and pre ordered the black turbo.
I haven't recieved anything in the mail but the email I got from VW with my shipping information (it's being shipped to the dealer) said it's going to arrive on SATURDAY! Is this weird? has anyone else received a email with shipping info like this? I don't know if it really is coming saturday because I never got a key like the people above. Would they ship it to the billing address or the dealer address since that's where it's being delivered? What do you guys think? |
