Question Where does the Engine Oil go

So as far as i know the engine is airtight ?

In some engines you never need to top up the oil, like my brothers RS6

Yet in mine i need to top up every 2 months or so.

Just wondered where it goes ?

Is it burn't off ? Or ?

Some cars engines are just heavier drinkers than others, kinda' like people. Seems when they have problems they drink more. If you know what I mean.

Basically, the oil gets around the pistons and is burnt off; if there was NO clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall, they could not move. If you want to know more about oil consumption, here is a good read -

Engine Oil Consumption

I was going to be a smartass and say "under the 710 cap", but I guess that's not what you were asking

Do you have a 2.0L; could it possibly be the ring issue that many have had? Here in the states; many had the dealer ok a re-ring job (if the oil went beyond the oil consumption test) and that seemed to fix most people's issues. If thats the case; I guess the oil was going past the rings, getting burned in the cylinders and going out the exhaust!

Here is a link; discussing the issue:

710 cap would of fallen on dumb ears, must be a U.S. term

4,000 miles is 2 months. It's either half way down the # marker or just over it. But yes a litre top up. Is there much difference between the oils ? I know i have to use diesel oil. Cheapest $22 a litre, but there are some that are $38 and $46 going with $2 to the £1
