Default Anybody here ever moved without a job?

As some on you may already know, I am planning to make a move from Arkansas to Oklahoma City in late February or early March. Ever since moving to AR with my family in 1996, I've always told myself I would one day move back to OK. I've been miserable here in AR from day one. My awesome best friend and fellow Orger Fallon, has graciously offered to let me stay with her for a very reasonable rent. My reasons for wanting to moving to OKC are many- better job market, better pay, not nearly as much time sitting in traffic, etc... I currently work in a real estate agency in Little Rock which is about 30 miles from where I live. With the exception of a few people, I love my job even though the pay isn't great. I typically spend anywhere from 4-6 hours a day sitting in traffic. Our agency will be moving into a larger building sometime in February and that will add an extra hour or two to my daily commute. I want to find a better paying job but the job market here is terrible. Finding a job in Conway is next to impossible and the pay in this town is pathetic. I've thought about moving to Little Rock in the past but the crime rate is rising and homes and apartments are more expensive than ones in Oklahoma City. I have a good resume, lots of customer service and administrative experience, excellent references, a degree, and I speak some Spanish. I don't think I would have much trouble finding a good job. Another reason for me wanting to move now is because Fallon plans on moving to San Francisco sometime this year and I am very interested in buying her house. I would like to get some work experience and save some money in OKC before applying for a mortgage. This is the first time I would be living on my own. I'm very excited about moving but just can't help but be nervous and a little scared. I'm very lucky lucky to have such a wonderful friend who is willing to put up with me. So, have any of you ever moved before finding a job?

It's a scary thought. I did move here, in 1991, without a job first, but I was moving in with my future husband, who set up here before I arrived. So, not exactly the same scenario. Been working ever since.

I am a follower of this. Things happen for a reason, and it always works out.

I am currently testing this theory in my own life. I wish you luck, and I know it will work out for you.

I can't say that I ever have Kat. But I wanted to subscribe to your thread and wish you all the best. You're a great woman with a good heart- I expect nothing but great things to come your way.

Well it sounds like your going to make the move, so get that resume out their now.

No sense waiting for the move to find that job. Agree with what dnyed stated with thugs happen for a reason.

Sounds like your very customer service oriented with a great attitude. Shouldn't be hard to land something in the new town.

Best of luck with it, hope it all works out for you. Keeps us posted

I've applied for close to 20 different jobs and nobody has called me for an interview. I did speak with a staffing agency and was basically told that nobody would bother contacting me because I still live in AR and they wouldn't want to take a chance hiring me since I don't live there yet.

As long and you can survive on your savings for a month or two, or have someone willing to help you out until you get a job, I say go all in. If your heart is in it, you can make it happen. I did when I moved to atlanta, and it was the best decision I made in my life.

Hubby and I did, in November 2010. He's still having a hard time finding a job. And I've had two part time jobs, one I had to quit because it was running HJ into the ground. The other was a temp/seasonal job, retail at Christmas. I don't mean to scare you away from the move... but it's not easy. We had money to survive on, but it went fast. And now we're barely making it because we're both unemployed.

I wish you the best of luck with your move, and hope that you have better luck than we have had.

Tamika, I'm so sorry you and your husband have had a rough time finding a job. I hope both of you are able to find something soon. Fallon and some of her friends have been so helpful in trying to find a job for me. I've been looking online for one as much as possible and OKC has plenty of jobs in my field but I think the fact that I don't live there yet is what's keeping employers from calling me. I should have around $3,500 saved, depending on what I get after taxes, so that will help. I may also get a part-time job somewhere while I look for something full-time.

sounds like you have the right mindset to make the move now, and by living with Fallon & having some savings, you'll be able to concentrate on the job search.

I did it in '92 when i left Active Duty in the Army...went from Germany to Wisconsin with no job lined up...i hit the ground running, and it still took me a couple of months to find a job.

Moved again to Virginia in late '93---hired by the Army as a government civilian, and back to doing the type of work I'd done as a green-suiter...I've been here ever since.

Wish you the best on the move and the job search.

my only words of wisdom: follow up with the staffing agency and the companies you contacted earlier to let them know you're on the ground in OKC...you may find they are still looking for someone.

As a young kid all alone, I was in a rough place because I had a job in another city but it went away, spent time on the couch of a friend there trying to find something but it just didn't work out. So I got on the bus with what I had in one bag and went to my home city, with not much more than the bus ticket cost for money.

Got a crummy job, crummy apartment, and picked up with friends again, one of which was going to a tech school and got me in there. Amusingly he never really finished, went another direction, and I am now to turn a phrase, "the man now, dog."

Oh, and to top things off the crummy apartment burned down and I lost all my stuff six months later. Turned out the guy in the first floor apartment was out of jail a month prior for arson, his M.O. being starting fires and then being a big hero saving everyone from the fire.

But it all worked out, because I had met my wife at the school, and then we got a place together and lived happily ever after. The Beetle's down payment was a wedding gift from our parents. All win.

Thanks Warren. I absolutely will be in contact with every staffing agency in the OKC area and applying for as many jobs as possible.

Janitz... wow, that is quite a story. At least it had a happy ending for you.

Just stay confident and everything will be OK, you have everything to succeed - friends, education, etc.
My husband and me moved from Europe with little English, even less money, no jobs, legal immigrants, just 2 small kids and 4 suitcases (books and china, we didn't know better), not a day were a public burden, but we had friends, made new friends, fast forward - happy past, present and future.

Moving to another state make me nervous so I can't imagine moving to another country! You should be very proud of yourselves. Which country are you from?

Hey there Kathryn

I moved to WI without finding a job first and I can honestly say it sucks, I did move in with Scott so I am not alone. I wish you the best of luck it sounds like you are on the right track and I am sure you will find a job soon. I am unfortunately not having good luck at all, the job market here is pretty bad, I have applied at A LOT of places and haven't gotten any calls

I know it's a big step but like everyone mentioned here, you are definitely on the right track and just keep working hard and be persistent when looking for a job once you move. Wish you all the best! You should be fine

Right now I think the job market is bad wherever you go. It's all a numbers game. So apply, apply, apply. And when you DO move, Call those places back. Say "hey, I applied 'x' number of days ago, and now I live here, any chance you're more interested?"

I moved to Georgia almost 5 years ago, without a job. I moved in with my mom. The market was a little better then, and I was able to land a job with Walmart almost instantly. Then moved on to another job a few months later. It hasn't been til the last few years that I"ve had a hard time finding work. Right now I'm working a temp job at Target.

The best advice I can say is, regardless of pay, regardless of hours, regardless of temp work, a job is better than no income. So, if you are persistant and confident, you'll do fine. Also look for job fairs that may be going on shortly after you move. Sometimes it's all about networking, not so much qualifications.

Good luck! Sounds like you got a decent plan. It may take time but it'll work.

Sounds like a good plan!
Follow your heart, and it will turn out ok! Don't worry.
You have everything to make it out there, so if that's where your heart and mind is, go for it!
