Bump.

BTW, get the fit over the Smart. More room and just about the same gas mileage. The Smart isn't too practical. But it's your thing, do what you wanna do

GoOd luck on the sale.

FIT: 28-mpg in the city and 34-mpg on the highway
My last tank with NB 2.0 5spd: 33.6MPG overall (about 40% city, 60% highway)

Sooooo, why are you doing this, again?

He's spending $10,000 (cost differential) to get a 5mpg better average (I'm being super generous). This will take several hundred thousand miles to catch up. I could understand if there was a 50% or 100% improvement. Doing it for that reason then makes economical sense.

Just say this instead. "I'm tired of driving a 10 year old car and want something shiney and new. I think I'm buying a Honda Fit. The bonus is I will get even better mileage and have a 10 year newer car under warranty" You aren't really saving any money buying the new car. However you are buying peace of mind.

Alot of people are doing this, I can't figure out why.
The amount you LOSE on resale is gonna be larger than a years worth of gas on the bug
and if you look at a gas millage chart you see our cars aren't very bad, not worth selling anyway.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bestworst.shtml
basically you either have to go to a smaller car than we already have or shell out alot of money for a hybrid for any real difference.
Unless the car you're trading for is on lat list it's not worth it at all.

I faced this same issue when I wanted to get something more fuel efficient, too. I would be saving about $400 a year in gas, but would have added about $10,000 in loans. Obviously, it didn't make sense. But, I do understand the want for something new and shiny.

There's no apostrophe before an 's' when you're talking about the plural version of a word. "I took some neat photo's!" is NOT correct.

I just did the math on my own car while weighing out my options... It doesn't make any financial sense for me either.

Here are the numbers

Cash outlay to purchase a smart fortwo above the sale of Pomelo is $6000
7500 miles per year
$1250 Pomelo
$714 smart fortwo
$536 difference

$6000/536= 11.2 years to absorb the difference.

$1250 in gas per year for Pomelo
$750 for a $12,000 TDi
$500 difference

$4000/500=8 years to absorb the difference on a $12,000 TDi

$10,000 price differential on your Bug vs the Honda Fit
15,000 miles per year
$2000 Bug
$1714 Fit
$285 Difference

$10,000/285 = 35 years to absorb the difference.

BTW... your bug looks pretty awesome. Good luck with the sale. I'd actually love to buy it.

I think you should take out that black pleather interior and put in some nice soft black cloth and up the price to $5K even. Then advertise nice cozy seating for those cold winter nights and seats you won't stick to in summer

I actually think someone posted an ad looking for black or grey pleather. OH, that was me
