How often did you change the oil, and what oil was used? Who serviced it?

every 5k, factory oil, @ Gossett VW in Memphis... a TDI mechanic from a non-dealer shop has got me considering using his shop instead of the dealer (now in St. Louis) for the next oil change which is due in about 300 mi.

thanks for looking

I'm sorry to hear that... Given the 5k interval I doubt it, but can you prove the "factory oil" used was the correct VW-spec 505.01 (or 507.00) specified in your owner's manual rather than the normal synthetic used for gassers? The two possible ways you could tell would be:
  1. If the particular name of the oil is written on the service record, or
  2. If they gave you the bottle containing the extra 1/2 liter (since the correct oil, unlike the normal stuff they probably used, doesn't come in 50-gal drums)
In case you're wondering, this is why I ask -- any informed '04-'06 TDI buyer should want these questions answered too. I'm not going to buy your car (although I'd love to, I can't even slightly afford it), but I'm helping you be prepared for people who might.

Is it this shop? (If not, it probably should be. The owner(?) is a TDI Club member (username oilhammer) and one of the pre-eminent TDI experts in that part of the country.

I have only owned this car for about 2 mos and, due to a job loss, must sell it quickly. I do have service receipts from Gossett VW in Memphis, and the oil part number and designation is as follows:

VWN G052167A2 CASTROL DIESEL FULL SYNTHETIC

I have owned 3 other TDI's and 3 pre-TDI VW diesels and 2 Nissan Sentra diesels. So far, I like this car better than all but my 80 Dasher Wagon. I actually know the owner of the shop where oilhammer works, and have used his place in the past for my non-diesels, of which I have 5 (lots of kids driving!!). If I keep this car (which I would prefer, since my wife and daughters love and have named it) I will more than likely start having them service it.

Please let me know if this is the 'right' oil.

Thanks for the feedback!

Holy cow, it actually is! Aside from them letting you have them change it twice as often as necessary (it only needs to be done every 10k... I wonder if they didn't know, or if they just chose not to tell you), Gossett VW seems to actually be competent. I'm impressed!

In that case, that's one fine TDI you've got there. I hope you keep it, but if not then I'm sure you won't have too much trouble finding a buyer. There aren't too many PDs out there that have always used the right oil, and have the records to prove it. Either way, good luck!

$18,000 is just a few grand too steep for me but good luck. I truly hope you find a buyer quick.

Default Thanks!

Good to know they used the right oil whether I keep or sell. With gas and diesel being relatively cheap right now, it may take a while to sell. Non-TDI folks seem to buy these cars for mpg and longevity, and when gas is cheap they aren't too interested. TDI folks seem to buy them mostly when they are cheap... smart! I particularly like TDI's, but have now been bitten by the Beetle bug as well!

I would love to get some advice from anyone on mod's if (likely) I keep it. Thanks again all!

Just because that is the part number they put on the receipt (which the computer likely spits out when they input the car info)...does not mean their oil change monkey puts the right stuff in. Dealers often have bulk tanks to store their oil and there have been many cases of the wrong oil being put in regardless of what is on the receipt.

The only way to know for sure, is to do it yourself or have someone do it who you can trust.

If you end up keeping the car, have Brian (oilhammer) service it EXCLUSIVELY. He is one of the foremost experts in the country on these engines.

Good luck with your car and your job search (I'm in the same boat right now...it sucks)

In my neck of the woods an '06 TDI price range averages $13,500 to $16,500; probably not what you were expecting. I too like your car but it is out of my price range, sorry.
