Unhappy rear lighter

i have done many google searchs to see if anyone has ever had a problem with the rear cigarette lighter but i have no found any solution. the problem is that whenever anyone gets in the back they have a tendancy to kick it. we take the car back to the dealership and they fix it but i would like to know how to fix this on my own if possible and i know from now on i know to let one person in on each side instead of from just one side because thats how it gets knocked out. any help?

Hey speaking of the rear cig lighter... is there actually supposed to be a "lighter" in there? Mine is just the outlet (or whatever it is called).... but no lighter. I never really cared b/c I would never need it but just curious.

I think Euro models come with an ashtray whereas the North American models get the 12v plug.

It's just a 12V port for cell phone charging, portable DVD player, Game Boy etcetc. I don't choke cigs but I picked up a vintage Wolfsburg Edition dimpled chrome lighter in case the ghost of Jerry Garcia wants a ride.

My power thing in the back won't "click" back in and it stays out all of the time. Can I get it replaced? It is soooo annoying!

Yes, your car is under warranty, take it back to the dealer and let them play with it.

There is a little round cog that sometimes falls out, and if that cog doesn't engage the row of teeth that guides the drawer in and out, it will absolutely not work. Go out to your car with a flashlight and look at it and you'll see what I mean. Replacing the little wheel will cure the problem. The dealer will fix it for you if you can't do it. Just let them mess with it so you don't have to...

My rear ashtray has been replaced under warranty several times. After the car went out of warranty, I had to pay for the last one. The dealer told me that it costs them about $150 each time they have to replace one of these under warranty. Supposedly, Volkswagen is now using a more durable rear ashtray assembly to cut down on their expenses. I surely hope so, or I will glue the thing shut!

My GF just got an 05 convertible, and is having the same problem with the rear lighter. It looks like there is a tiny pin on the side of the assembly (opposite side from the gear). Hers is broken off, so I will have to do some fabricating to get it to stay closed.

Anyone else done a mod to the door to keep it closed, short of duct tape?

Just got my new rear lighter assembly (12v receptacle)installed today. It is the NEW DESIGN type that is not supposed to break like the old ones did. It does not "click" open, when it is touched or pushed, it stays shut. If you want it open, you have to pull it open, it slides out. Looks very durable and much improved.

I did have to pay for this one, and for its installation, since the car is now out of warranty.

I have the same problem. Just noticed it today. I want to take it apart and fix it, but I need to know how to take it apart! There seems to be a clip inside that came loose. Can anyone help me? Thanks

Buy the "new" type. It is a drawer that slides out--not hinged. The new type won't pop open and does not have pins that snap. It will stay shut.
