Default NBC and winter

We are thinking to use Boumba this winter (no room left in the garage for a car )and we have some thought about the windows and doors.

How does it work in cold weather and /or freezing weather?

I drove my 2006 NBC all winter last year. Being in Fairbanks, AK we see some of the most extreme cold weather. It easily gets to -40 farenhite!

I never had any issues with my windows or doors. My windows dropped each and every time that I opened the doors. Though I would caution you to keep the snow buildup off the roof. I do not have a garage or carport to keep my beetle under so at night when their was a chance of snow, I would cover the top with a tarp or blanket so that I wouldnt get snow or ice build up on the roof. Snow that is frozen to the top is a pain to try to get off! The only other issue that I had at it was on my 98 beetle not a NBC was the gas cap got frozen shut. After a heavy snow, snow got packed in and around the gas cap and partialy melted then re-froze. It was impossible to open! So before to check that area for freeze up to!

Keep the snow and ice off the car and dont let it build up around the door and windows and I would think you would be fine to drive it. Also dont forget good winter tires!!!

Thank you very much Susie. You help us much to what we will decide for the winter. Again thank you. It seems easy to go through the winter...

At home the car will sleep outside but at work it will go inside. This will help to not built up snow or ice on the top.

But before winter comes in we still have a lot of more days to enjoy the top down...

Our's is going to spend the winter in a nice heated garage with my tractor and bike collection. It won't see the salt of Illinois.

I always forget about the salt. Salt is bad.

Lucky for me they do not use salt on the roads here in Fairbanks!

What do they use? I'm curious
BTW, I really like your avatar pic with the glacier, Susie.

I bought UBugNMe in Feb. 04 and she was gone through every winter being a daily driver. I have had no problem with snow or ice which we get alot of up here. I do make a point to hose her down when we get a break in the weather, paying close attention to the undercarriage. I would love to park her, but can't afford to get another car to drive through the winter so she will be on the road all winter again.

They usually only plow here and throw down gravel. It just gets so cold that using salt or other thawing agent just will not work. So we just drive on frozen roads all winter. Once the temp gets well below zero, the road freeze well and the ice on the roads gets "sticky" and the colder it gets the "stickier" the roads gets. It is hard to explain it, you just have to expierence it. Good tires are a must. I run Blizzaks, which are soft rubber so they stick to the road well, but lots of people run with studed tires, which I hate

I think I can only remember one time when they used salt here, or I think it was salt. It was a spring ice storm in late March or April and they used some thawing agent on the road. But that is the only time in 10 years of living here that I have seen them us anything.

Our late son had a 1967 NSU TTS rally car. NSU was one of the firms that merged to form AUDI. The TTS was their wolf in sheep's clothing race car. He grabbed it since it was documented to have never been driven in the winter. Started out in Cleveland and ended up in the Chicago area. To find a vintage European car with no salt damage is a find. The person who bought it from his estate has completed the restoration and the car is back on the show circuit. Here are a couple of links to some TTS sights. The first one has great music.

IF you think the Audi TT is neat, go look at the car that preceeded it on the track.
