Default broken top

no, not the flap, the whole thing.
It wouldn't go back up this afternoon. The flaps flipped into position, it lifted about an inch then stopped. Still made the whirling noise but wouldn't budge. I had to use the emergency method which was horrible and required me to push it up form behind.
anyone know what could be wrong?

Default Check the pump

Check the pump to see if all the fluid is there. I had the O ring go bad and all the fluid leaked out into the spare tire well. They had to replace the pump and a couple of the lines that go to the pump.

Use the reset-the-top procedure if you haven't already done so:

Go to your car with key in hand. Make sure you start with all 4 windows down. If they're up, start the car, put them down, then shut off engine.

Now: Turn on engine, and using the four-at-once big button, simultaneously raise windows all the way up. Using the same button, lower all the way down. Shut off the engine.

Now, restart the engine, and try to raise the top. Should work now.

Sorry, I just couldn't avoid a smart aleck answer.

You must be wearing a pair of Lederhosen and standing on your head when you do the above mentioned ritual.

Like this? I want to be sure and do it right...LOL. I hope that brown Lederhosen are appropriate.

There are 3 noises you should hear when you go to open the top. So, the top is open and you pull up on the switch to close the top due to migrate birds flying overhead and you don't want bird poop on your seats...

1 - top flaps open up (not much to hear on this one)

2 - top locks move to unlock position, there is a loud whirling noise that last about 3 or 4 seconds when working to design. There are 2 of these locks they are just past the rear speakers.

3 - top closes, there is a muted humming or dull whirling noise from the hydrolic pump in the trunk of the car, the top moves during time.

My question to you is, are you getting to the 3rd noise or is the second noise the only one you are hearing?

If the flaps go up, once the roof electronics see the signals from the roof flaps stating that they are up, the top locks are activated to move to an unlocked position. Each of these top locks have 2 micro switches on them, one for "locked" and the other for "unlocked". I've seen these switches fail every so often and also the screw drive that move the lock back and forth fail, the motor spins the screw, but the lock doesn't move, thus the motor keeps running because the lock never moves to trigger the lock/unlock position switch.

The pump that is located in the trunk of the car, on the left side, have you touched the valve on it?

If you look in the left side of the trunk, just below the "grill" that is in the plastic trim is a round rubber plug, remove it and you'll see a "T" handle, make sure it is snugged down (tighten).

BE VERY CAREFUL TURNING THAT "T" HANDLE WHEN LOOSING IT, IT ONLY TURNS MAYBE 2 TURNS THEN STOPS, FORCING IT WILL DESTROY THE PUMP ASM, A NEW ONE COST $1350.

If the T handle is snugged down, and you can hear the pump running but the top isn't moving... but you can manually open and close the top, then it sounds like you are going to need to replace the pump asm.

The windows and top are inline with eachother. If there happens to be an issue with the top this is the remedy. I had a similar issue (fortunately under warranty) when I took it to the dealer. It would have taken me 1 minute to resolve the issue. It is reported in the Bentley.
