Default Turbo available in what years?

Hey all.

I will be having someone visit car auctions to look for a NBC for me. I want a manual transmission with the turbo. I know the cabrio started in 2003. Anyone know where I can find the info as to when the turbo's were available in the cabrios? That would help them narrow down their search for me.

Thank you!

Should be '03-'05. Only 1.8T though, no TDI. In '06 is when the 2.5 started, along with the body change.

What would be the most fun to drive (the most power)? One with a manual turbo in 03-05, or a newer model?

The 5-speed 2004-05 turbo without a doubt.

2003 was the intro year for the vert. Since it was a late release, it only came with the 2.0 115hp engine and most were mated to the, then new to NB, 6sp Tiptronic. There were no 1.8T
turbo's available for the 2003 MY.
The 1.8T 150hp engine was introduced with the 2004 MY and only ran through the 2004-2005 MY. It was available in 5sp manual or 6sp Tiptronic. 2006 MY started the 2.5L 5cyl 150hp engine that is still the only engine available in the current NB coupe and convertible.
The 5sp manual is by far the most fun to drive with the 1.8T. I have a blast with mine every time I drive it.

Ok That's what I thought.

I want a manual (guess I need to learn how first) and I want the turbo.

I guess I'll have them start searching for an 04-05 for me.

Thanks for the help

It's easy to drive a 5-speed. And fun, too.

My 2003 NBC was a 1.8T, so... no. They were absolutely available with the 1.8T in the 2003 model year, but it wasn't until about mid-June 2003 when they were released.

A little background, though: As soon as the Concept One was greenlighted for production, I knew a 'vert would eventually be produced (and friends within the industry confirmed it). I had a pre-purchase deposit on it for almost five years, since the New Beetles were announced, and supposedly, mine was the first Turbo, Tip NBC in Texas, if not the USA.

My dad's car is standard so when it's back on the road again and insured I told him he's teaching me how to drive it. I don't want to burn out the clutch on the NB when I get it! haha!

I think it would be a lot of fun to drive a 5-speed cabrio!

You wouldn't burn out the clutch learning on the NB. I learned on my car at 54k and the clutch is still going strong at 95k

That's good to know. I still want to learn on his car first. That way I can start enjoying the beetle from day 1. I know his car has over 200k on it and its still running the original clutch. I told him that may change with me practicing. Haha.
