Default A few stupid questions..

Ok, I have a 2006 2.5L new beetle and when I bought it the guy selling it to me had only had it on his lot a few days and really didn't know much about the small things in the car, like how to turn on your fog lights and how to use my heated mirrors.
Both of those things the owner's manual says my car has. I know my car has the "premium sound and cold weather package, however I have no idea what that means or what it entails. I have the original paper that came on the window of the car so I am aware of what extras it has and I have just recently experienced the rain sensing wipers. Totally cool.

Ok so my questions are:

the book says i have fog lights, how do I use those/turn them on?

It also says I have heated mirrors, but I don't see how to use those either as on my door panel all I see are the mirror adjusters and they don't have anything about heat on them. My sister has a beetle and her's is with the adjustor knob but where is mine?

Does anyone else have this cold weather package and do you know what it is? I know I have heated seats but does it include anything else?

Anyone have xm radio? How much does that cost? I have the capabilities for that too!

As I've said here before, "only stupid question is the one you don't ask!"

Welcome to the World of NBs and Welcome to the Org, kelleygraves2!

You're Owner's Manual should cover every question you have posed except the cost of Satellite XM. Right now Sirius XM has a promo going for new owners of existing vehicles with factory equipped XM capability. I just got a flyer in the mail, pulled from VW's records from my Change in Ownership registartion card I sent in. I have a thread about it. Come back in a few minutes, I will find it and post a link here. I'm sure you can contact them and get the same 3 month free trial.
FREE (3) months SiriusXM with sending in Change in Ownership Card!

I don't presently have an '06 OM, but I have '07 and '08 manuals and if you are having trouble finding something I may be able to get you in the right direction. Best to read your manual from cover to cover. I promise an enlightening experience about many features you may not even know you have.

For more information on what's available and the cost and content of the assorted packages go to www.siriuxm.com/getmostofsiriustrial

What I don't understand is the book say under fog lights "pull the switch out of the (headlight simbol) position. An indicator light in the switch will come on."

This doesn't make sense to me? The symbol is shows a picture of is the symbol for the headlights on the on dial you turn to turn your headlights on. But you can't "pull out the button?"

Turn your headlights to the on position, and then give it a slight pull. This is another position on the switch. Stupidly though, you cannot operate your foglights without the headlights being on. Renders them useless. All about show!To function properly you need a Euroswitch which has a separate position. Do a thread search "Euroswitch" or give me a minute This thread is titled "Rear Fogs" but addresses the front fogs also
Rear Fogs... Again! Help...

The symbol will light up when you turn the fogs on. To turn them on, turn the headlights on and pull the switch toward you. It will click out a bit and you will see that little symbol light up. Give it a try.

BTW thank you for the response on the pic! I have a LOT to learn about my car.

Go to Post #6 above. I posted a .pdf of the page from the Owner's Manual that will explain this to you. You can open it and print it. Did you miss that post? I'm trying to help you, here!

Owner,s Manual. Index under "Lights", pg 106 maybe, same page you found the fog light switching on instructions, under "Switching on Fog Lights", further down, lighted symbol explained. When you have the time, you will be well served to read the Manual from cover to cover, carefully. Probably a lot of things you don't know you have or don't what they are or what they do.

I have read my owner's manual, in fact it sits on my coffee table and I browse through it all the time. However, I read that link you posted and the knob they are talking about on the drivers door in my car only does the mirror adjustment. There is not heat function. So, I was wondering, when they did the new model bug in 2005 i believe? I was wondering if they got rid of it or moved the function to another place because I just can't seem to figure it out.

Hi Kelley,

Which of these switches looks like yours? The white one has no heated mirrors and the grey does. If you do have the switch with the symbol showing a mirrow with 3 heat lines you have heated mirrors. To make them work, turn the knob to the mirror symbol and turn on the rear defroster. My '04 has the heated mirrors but unfortunately they no longer function.

Did you get your fogs working?

Well that solves the question about heated mirrors. Cars with switches like the bottom don't have heated mirrors. One less thing to worry about. The heated mirrors don't work but since I've never had heated mirrors before I don't miss them. Good to hear you got the fogs working.

Congrats on the new beetle I got mine last weekend and have found the answers to all my questions on this forum. I was glad to see that other newbies had experienced the same issues and the experts had come to their rescue. lol

Here's a tip about XM. My husband bought a truck with XM. We used the 3 month subscription and intentionaly let it run out. When we called to activate it it was kind of expensive imho so we held off since the financials werent lookin too great. 2 weeks later we got a letter in the mail from XM that said " We want you back!" and offered us a year of XM premium service for $69 so we bought it. That was much cheaper than what the cost was before it expired. We did that on his former truck and were able to get a lifetime subscription for $299 on his mobile xm thingie...which is now in my Beetle since i dont have the built in XM.

Thank you for the help guys. I've been having a difficult time learning this car because I'm coming from a 2001 toyota corolla that had manual windows and such. Plus, the guy who sold it to me didn't have a clue how to use it because it was only on the lot for a few days.

Thanks for the update, Kelly. Maybe the verts are set up with a different system than the hardtops.

I suspect this may also hold true with the hatchback. But, perhaps not. Have to read those manuals when I get back home Monday night.
