Purger valve problem

Why would the purger valve crap out. 2008 New Beetle. If the gas cap was not screwed on tight, would that cause the indicator light to go on?

I assume that means you have a CEL? What is the code? And yes, a gas cap not screwed on tight enough can trigger a CEL.
