Just checking if anyone here has this problem.
Just a few weeks after I got the car (a 2005 NBC) these dark greasy looking marks started appearing wherever the tops folds. Impossible to clean with anything too. Raggtop doesn't work on these. After a while some rubbing marks started to appear around the rear window. That's when VW decided to install a new top ($6600 under waranty) But the same problem showed up again on the new top within weeks. No rubbing though.. So far... How do you clean these??? And what are they??? No one at the dealership seems to know. They are sending another "guy from headquarters" to check it out, again.... |

That tends to be a problem with light colors (just look at a cloth after cleaning the interior). Road grime is the nightmare as it's dirt, rubber, oil, and anything else that happens to be floating around. You might try an inconspicuous spot with foaming Resolve carpet cleaner. If it does work I would then rinse the areas the resolve was used on with straight water to deactivate the cleaning agents so that it doesn't bleach out. If it doesn't work you could always try things like oxyclean in a similar manner. Best scenario... take it back to the dealer and see if they will replace the top with a black one. That's what I have, and while I do get creases you can't see the dirt. Yesterday I went out an thumped the top to get a dandylion seed off and the amount of dirt/dust that popped off was amazing. Good luck and keep the forum updated.

This happens usually when you put the top down and it is dirty. Unfortunately, it would be simply aggravating to clean your top before you put it down. That's the downfall of tan/light colored cloth tops...even vinyl tops as well. They look great when brand new, but even after a few weeks, they show age and dirt more than any other tops. Now if its actual grease, not dirt, then the top is rubbing someplace on the frame where it is not supposed to. All those dirt marks or creases are simply where dirt is rubbing on dirt and smearing it into the fabric. However, even perfectly clean tops will show fold creases, where the material is perhaps a different shade, or smoother than the rest of the top. Again, this is because material is rubbing on material, thus shaving away its luster and texture.
My only solution to help prevent those dirt creases, lay a protective towel...nothing real thick, even a plastic bag would do, where each of those creases are while its folding back. Either that, or buy a dark blue, maroon, or black top. |

Thanks for the feedback.
I am aware of the marks where the top folds and not worry about that. But these are black marks . Lots of them, wherever the top folds. Symetrical on both sides. It makes the top look like it is 10 years old and was never washed. They gave me a brand new top about 5 months ago and they appeared again after about 4 weeks... |
