Default Clay Bar Results

I was EXTREMELY pleased with BB's (my beetle) clay bar results:

My before pictures and the half hood done and other half not done looked like crap... in person, you could see a difference... but the pictures didn't show that as well. So take my word for it, BB looks about 4 years younger now.

It was 88 degrees when I started at 5am and 118º when I finished in the afternoon.

So I opted for the soap and water method with my claybarring, which meant that instead of using the wax like quick detailer, I used a bottle of soap and water, I got a MATCHING sprayer for 99 cents, and had to share it with you because it not only proves I have NBAD, but matches BB so well...

Before Pic: just take my word for it, she was dirty and had oxidation:

Some of my supplies (Take my word for it, I used a hose from kmart, water and the garage in order to stay away from the direct sun.):

I used dawn soap to help remove the previous coats of wax that yellow Meguires brush worked amazing on the wheels and I found it at Big Lots cheap:

I also used Mothers wheel polish (not pictured?!?!), it was really nice so after washing, drying, polishing... I put a thin coat of the tech wax over it.

Okay, so my next post will include the shots of BB after she had her Clay Bar spa day.

Yeah. Ive been waiting to post!
I clay barred Zoomer on Saturday ... and ran out of spray detailer - used it before so very little left. I could only do HALF my car.

But, soapy water with the clay bar? Doesnt it say NOT to do that? 0_o ... and the clay bar takes off all the old wax so, I wouldnt use kitchen soap. ??? :O

This is a great shot because you can see how great the paint looks.. there was paint missing by the plate, so I needed to touch that up.... I have yet to pick out a plate cover so I painted the screws Techno Blue...

I didnt the wheels all done. But thanks to Su and Gina, they told me that I need to be brave when taking off the plasic caps on the rims so I can clean underneath... I guess I will be now doing that this week... I was just too scared I would break something.

I love this shot:

I dont know why the windsheild looks all nasty in this pic, I just cleaned it and its about a month old. Oh well.

So I just looked outside and she looks even darker and richer then yesterday... I will try to get another coat of that tech wax on her in the upcoming weekends. I sure can't wait to show her off in Vegas. Hopefully I can get her a foglamp in time ( or she might have to just wear and eye patch )

Please iqnore her dents and dings... the previous owner was a snowboarder (yes in Arizona) and so BB has some marks (like the one on her tush/hatch.

She is still a work in progress and then some mods might begin.

I hear you, it does say not to do that... but there was a reasoning for my "maddness". I take Petes advice to heart in this stickie note: http://www.newbeetle.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7531.

I had claybarred my black jetta a few times, using the detailing spray and felt like it didn't remove enough of the old junk... so I thought, "what the heck" and with the Beetle, I just made sure to keep the area moist with the soapy water.

I hope that helps.

I bet Zoomer looks awesome, post some pics when you get the baby all done!

I too use the soapy water approach, rather than using the spray detailer that comes with some of the kits. I do the claybar before putting on a new coat of wax to get rid of the old wax, and also to get rid of all airborn contaminents.

If you're trying to strip off the old wax, it seems silly to use the spray detailer as your slippery solution, as it's just putting more (albeit cheap) wax on the car. So I much prefer the soapy water mix. And no, I've never seen it said where that should not be used instead of the spray detailer.

And as for the dish soap. The acidic content of the dish water is perfect for helping remove the old wax. If you do it one or twice a year to get rid of old wax, it won't hurt the car at all. But wouldn't be recommended on a daily basis.

Yes, on my "Mothers" instructions on the clay bar, it did say you should use only their quick detailer and warned about water and soap.

BUT: I love how mine turned out and I had now issues LOL.

Thanks Pete, your thread was extremely helpful.

This weekend I bought the Mothers claybar system. I just read the directions and it just says to use the instant detailer do not use water. I'm going out pretty soon to wash Chip and start claybaring. I've never done it before so wish me luck.

I know, I was just sitting on the garage floor and I saw my plate (I removed it to claybar) and the screws were so rusty. So I did a ghetto mod and painted them. My boyfriend pulled up to bring me lunch (isn't he a sweethear) and started laughing that I was painting my screws!

I know I am screwy!
